Shirak SC, officially known as Football Club Shirak (Armenian: Շիրակ Ֆուտբոլային Ակումբ), is a professional football club based in Gyumri, Armenia. The club was founded in 1958 and is registered with the Football Federation of Armenia, which lists its official website as fcshirak.am. [1]
Design and History
The Shirak crest incorporates a panther surmounted by a cross, an element drawn from the coat of arms and flag of the city of Gyumri. [2] The city’s flag features a red cross with a golden panther, with the panther representing the Bagratids coat of arms and symbolizing the independence and statehood of Armenia. [3] The Shirak region was the residency of the Bagratids, which is why their coat of arms is used in the city’s heraldry. [4]
The club has traditionally played in orange and white kits. [5] The 2025-26 home kit, produced by adidas, is described as plain orange and white. [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The panther and cross motif in the club’s crest mirrors the emblem of Gyumri, the club’s home city. The golden panther from the Bagratuni coat of arms symbolizes the independence and statehood of Armenia, while the red cross represents the longevity of the people and Christian belief. [3] The club’s nickname, “Black Panthers” (Sev Hovazner), further reinforces the panther association. [7]
An early 1990s version of the Shirak logo was designed by Dmitry Lukyanchuk, according to the logo archive Brands of the World. [8]
