The South Alabama Jaguars are the intercollegiate athletics teams of the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama. The university’s athletic identity is built around the Jaguar mascot, a choice made by the South Alabama Board of Trustees in 1965, and the program’s official colors are blue, white, and red.[1]
Design and History
The current athletic logo was unveiled in August 2008. Described by the university as “an aggressive and stylized Jaguar profile,” the mark incorporates the school’s signature American flag colors of red, white, and blue.[2] The design features a right-facing snarling jaguar head in white with blue highlights and a red motion stripe, paired with a stylized “South Alabama Jaguars” wordmark in red and blue.[3]
The 2008 logo was created in response to the launch of new football and marching band programs, which the USA Board of Trustees approved in December 2007. University President Gordon Moulton assembled a 14-person logo committee representing faculty, staff, students, alumni, friends, and the athletic department to review the school’s sports branding.[2]
Four professional artists affiliated with the University of South Alabama designed the logo: Matt Johnson, a USA alumnus and graphic arts instructor; Dianne Marshall, director of USA publication services; Scott Donaldson, a graphic artist in publication services; and Elise Jones, a graphic artist.[2]
The new design replaced the previous Jaguar heads and stalking Jaguars marks. Baseball and softball were permitted to continue using the historic interlocking “SA” on their uniforms, while the university’s academic logo, the interlocking “USA” in a box, remained unchanged.[2]
Prior to the 2008 redesign, the athletic program used a series of earlier marks. A primary logo from 1985 to 1998 depicted a right-facing yellow jaguar in motion beside a serif USA monogram.[4] A secondary logo used from 1998 to 2008 showed a right-facing jaguar head in yellow, blue, and red.[5]
Around 2018, the jaguar head mark was updated with a lighter, more open mouth treatment, and this version eventually fully replaced the earlier filled-mouth design.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The university’s athletics identity is referred to as the “Jag Head” logo in official university communications.[7] The 2008 design was intended to capture “the excitement and enthusiasm” of students and alumni, as well as “the growing strength” of the athletic and marching band programs, according to President Moulton at the time of the unveiling.[2]
Typography and Design
Official reproduction guidelines adopted in August 2008 specify that the athletic logotype uses University Red (Pantone 193) and Blue (Pantone 281) as the only multi-colors in the mark. The word “Jaguars,” “Lady Jags,” or “Jags” placed below “South Alabama” must appear in red as shown in the approved configurations.[8]
The university’s official brand guidelines confirm USA Red (Pantone 193), USA Blue (Pantone 281), and USA White as the primary colors, with the athletics marks governed by their own usage policies set by the director of athletics.[9][10]
