The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders are the intercollegiate athletic teams of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, a public university located on Ward Island in Corpus Christi Bay. The university’s athletics program was founded in 1999, and the teams compete in NCAA Division I as members of the Southland Conference.[1]
The Islanders athletic identity is built around a family of official marks managed by the university’s Marketing and Communications office. These include the full Islanders logo, the “Big I” logo, and a standalone wordmark, all of which are governed by detailed usage guidelines.[2]
Design and History
The current primary athletics logo is dominated by a large blue block letter “I” with an oval containing a stylized ocean wave overlaid on the letter. The word “ISLANDERS” is arched above the “I.”[3] The wave is depicted in blue on the bottom, green on the top, and is white-capped.[4]
This mark was introduced in 2011, replacing an earlier design that featured a stylized wave with the large word “Islanders” above it and the lettering “Texas A&M-Corpus Christi” on top.[5] The earlier athletic graphic mark was originally created in 2000, consisting of a stylized wave with a connecting background shape around the word “Islanders” in block letters, with “Texas A&M-Corpus Christi” in sans serif type above.[6]
The university’s official logo guidelines describe the athletics logos as “the official series of graphics representing intercollegiate athletics at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.” Variations include the full Islanders logo, the “Big I” logo, and the wordmark. The “Big I” logo cannot be used on promotional items without the inclusion of “Islanders” or the university name in the design.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The ocean wave element in the “I” directly references the university’s island campus location on Corpus Christi Bay. The university’s brand strategy identifies “The Explorer” as its brand personality, and the coastal imagery is central to the “Island University” identity.[7]
The official colors for the university logo are two-tone Islander Blue (Pantone 300 C) and Islander Green (Pantone 348 C), with silver serving as an accent color. Islander Blue is the dominant color for design purposes.[2][8] The university also maintains a secondary palette and special-use accent colors, including Sky Blue, Palm Green, black, and a blue-to-green gradient that functions as a critical design support element.[8]
All athletic logos may also be produced in single-color versions: black, white, Islander Green, or Islander Blue.[2]
Typography and Design
The university’s brand typography system specifies Gibson Semibold for headlines, subheads, and call-out type; Gotham Narrow for body copy and captions; and Garamond Pro as a formal option. Oswald and Gibson are optimized for digital environments.[9] These typefaces apply to the broader university brand system rather than the athletics logo specifically.
In 2022, the university unveiled an updated version of its mascot, Izzy the Islander, a blue character with waves of green and blue hair wearing board shorts and sunglasses. Rickabaugh Graphics, a company specializing in university mascot design, assisted with the project.[10] The mascot update was prompted by a letter from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs regarding the previous mascot’s use of a tiki mask and tribal tattoo, which hold sacred meaning to Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders.[10]
