The Toledo Rockets are the intercollegiate athletic teams of the University of Toledo, an NCAA Division I program competing in the Mid-American Conference. The athletic department maintains a distinct visual identity, separate from the university’s academic marks, built around the school’s midnight blue and gold colors and the rocket imagery tied to the “Rockets” nickname.
Design and History
The Rockets nickname traces to a 1923 football game against Carnegie Tech, when Pittsburgh sportswriters, learning the university had no nickname, pressed a UT student working in the press box for one. Impressed by the underdog team’s flashy performance, the student labeled them “Skyrockets,” which the writers shortened to “Rockets.”[1]
The current primary athletic logo features a blue and gold rocket flying upward from behind an arched “TOLEDO” wordmark in gold with blue trim.[2] This design has remained essentially unchanged since at least 1997, when a version of the rocket-behind-wordmark mark first appeared. That earlier version, which existed from 1997 but saw limited use, became the official primary logo in 2015.[3] In 2019, the shade of blue in the mark was darkened.[2]
The athletic department’s branding guidelines designate the primary logo for all general Toledo athletics use, with specific color variations approved for different background colors. A secondary athletic logo is reserved for use after the primary mark has already appeared.[4]
In August 2026, Toledo Athletics unveiled the “Glass City Edition” apparel collection, introducing Glass City Blue, a light blue shade inspired by the Toledo city flag introduced in 2025, along with a Glass City Script wordmark. The design retains a Midnight Blue stroke to keep the mark connected to the Rockets’ established identity.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The rocket imagery directly reflects the athletic nickname, which originated in 1923 as described above.[1] The university’s connection to rocketry was reinforced in 1961, when the university procured a genuine one-ton rocket from the U.S. Army missile program, donated in part because of the university’s affiliation with the Ordnance Corps of the U.S. Department of Army. That rocket sits outside the Glass Bowl stadium.[1]
The university’s official colors are midnight blue and gold.[6] The athletic department’s branding guidelines specify Midnight Blue as Pantone 289 C (HEX #0B2240) and Athletic Gold as Pantone 116C (HEX #FFCD00).[4] The university’s general brand palette uses a slightly different Midnight Blue (Pantone 294 C, HEX #003E7E) and Gold (Pantone 116 C, HEX #FFD200), reflecting the separation between academic and athletic marks.[6]
Typography and Design
The “TOLEDO” lettering in the primary athletic logo is a custom design created specifically for the mark rather than a commercially available typeface.[7] The athletic department’s branding guidelines prohibit stretching, distorting, rotating, discoloring, or texturing the logos, and restrict approved verbiage to forms such as “Toledo,” “Rockets,” and “Toledo Athletics.”[4]
Rocket Athletic logos are reserved for athletic marketing purposes only and may not be used for general university marketing and promotion, which uses a separate UToledo logo system with its own shield and typesetting.[6]
