The UEFA Euro 2012 logo was the official emblem of the 14th UEFA European Football Championship, co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine. The logo and slogan were unveiled on 14 December 2009 at a ceremony in Kyiv, the venue for the tournament final, attended by UEFA president Michel Platini.[1][2]
Design and History
The emblem was derived from wycinanka, the traditional art of paper cutting practised in rural areas of Poland and Ukraine.[2] The composition featured a flower representing each of the co-host nations and a central ball symbolising the emotion and passion of the competition.[2] The plant imagery was described by UEFA as representing growth, with the symbolism of a plant that grows fully in line with the aspirations of the two host countries.[1]
The tournament slogan, “Creating History Together”, was launched alongside the logo to underscore the uniqueness of the first UEFA European Championship hosted in Eastern Europe.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo depicted a plant whose flower was a football, with two leaves growing from the stem on either side, coloured in the national colours of Poland (red and white) and Ukraine (yellow and blue).[4] The stem of the plant represented UEFA and symbolised the structure of the tournament and European football.[5] The wycinanka tradition itself symbolises local flora and fauna and is a tribute to mother nature.[5]
