USA Cricket is the national governing body for cricket in the United States, recognized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as an Associate Member. The organization’s visual identity was introduced in September 2017, before USA Cricket formally received ICC approval in January 2019, and was designed to mark a fresh start for the sport in America following the expulsion of the previous governing body, USACA.[1][2]
Design and History
The USA Cricket logo was unveiled on September 24, 2017, deliberately coinciding with the 173rd anniversary of the first international sporting event, a cricket match between the USA and Canada played in 1844.[1][3] The brand launch was managed by the ICC Americas USA Project team as the first step toward establishing a new governing body after USACA was expelled by the ICC in June 2017.[4]
The mark was designed by Adrenalin, a Denver-based branding and marketing agency that won a competitive pitch process for the project.[3] Adrenalin led a collaborative process that included surveys and feedback from the cricket community and ICC advisory groups to determine which elements should appear in the mark.[5][4]
The logo replaced the USACA emblem, which featured an eagle embedded in a cricket ball. The new design prominently features a cricket bat, a deliberate choice explained by ICC Americas USA Project Manager Eric Parthen: “As we want to take this sport mainstream and not just be a sport for the people that are currently playing it or the expats, that bat was the single most identifying factor for cricket within the United States.”[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo uses the colors of the US flag and incorporates familiar American elements, including a star and four stripes arranged in the manner of a shield. The back of a cricket bat cuts across the stripes.[1] According to the official media release, the logo and the brand represent unity.[1] The shield format drew comparisons to the National Football League’s shield logo in contemporary coverage of the launch.[6]
Adrenalin’s stated goal was to develop a brand that “represents both the history and future of cricket in the United States,” drawing on the sport’s heritage while signaling a new direction for the federation.[5]
Typography and Design
No official typography specifications or construction details for the USA Cricket logo have been published in the available sources. The documented design elements are limited to the shield arrangement, the star, the four stripes, the cricket bat, and the US flag color palette.[1]
