Vancouver Whitecaps FC unveiled their current crest on June 8, 2010, ahead of the club’s inaugural Major League Soccer season in 2011. The logo replaced a cresting wave design and features the words “Vancouver Whitecaps FC” written in white on a deep sea blue background, with the mountains of Vancouver’s north shore sitting above the club’s name and reflecting down on the city’s waterfront below it.[1] The mark has remained the club’s primary identity since its introduction.
Design and History
The Whitecaps name dates to the club’s founding in 1973, inspired by the white crests on the waves of the Pacific shoreline and the snow-capped mountains visible across Vancouver’s background.[2] The original 1974 NASL-era logo was a simple crest featuring a red soccer ball with a maple leaf in the middle and the words “Vancouver Whitecaps” above, with the club playing in red and white.[2]
Before the 1979 season, the club changed its colours from red and white to blue and white and swapped the maple leaf for a swerving wave. Dick Martin designed the new logo, keeping the shield style to tie into the trend of English soccer leagues while changing to blue because it better symbolized the water surrounding the region.[2]
The current MLS-era crest was developed through a 10-month consultation process that included adidas, Publicis Canada, the Whitecaps FC ownership group, staff, fans, and season ticket holders.[1] The club worked directly with adidas on the creation of the logo.[3] The image features three North Shore mountain peaks towering above the club name, with the peaks reflected in blue water below.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The crest draws its inspiration from the geography of Vancouver, depicting the mountains and waterfront that characterize the city.[5] The mountains appear to reflect into a giant “V” and “W” below the Whitecaps name, incorporating the club’s initials into the waterfront imagery.[4]
The colour used to symbolize the reflection of the mountains on the waterfront is a lighter blue called “Whitecaps blue,” a tribute to the primary colour on the club’s logo worn during the historic 1979 Soccer Bowl championship season.[1] Silver lining the mark is a nod to the club’s championship titles won since 1974.[1]
The club’s 2024 Indigenous Peoples Celebration logo, designed by Squamish Nation digital artist Austin Aan’yas Harry, explicitly referenced the duality depicted in the main Whitecaps FC logo, with a dark blue serpent head representing the mountains and a light blue serpent head signifying the ocean waves.[6]
