The Lehigh Valley Phantoms are an American Hockey League (AHL) franchise based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and the top minor league affiliate of the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers. The team’s visual identity has remained remarkably consistent since the franchise’s founding in 1996, surviving two relocations with only minor color and wordmark adjustments.
Design and History
The Phantoms franchise was established in 1996 as the Philadelphia Phantoms, playing at the Spectrum across from the Flyers’ new arena. The original logo featured a black spectral mask with orange eyes, a design that has followed the organization since its inception. The crest was described as a black spectral mask roughly resembling two Philadelphia Flyers logos mirrored together. [1]When the franchise relocated to Glens Falls, New York, as the Adirondack Phantoms in 2009, the team kept its mascot, primary logo, and colors intact, changing only the area name. [2] During the final three seasons in Glens Falls, the team adopted a circular crest featuring the traditional Phantoms logo inside a round border with the club’s name around the outside. [1]In November 2012, in advance of the move to Allentown, the franchise unveiled its new name, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, along with a revised logo. The change was minimal: the team dropped the purple accent color that had been used since the franchise’s inception and replaced it with “electric blue.” [3] The logo and overall identity stayed essentially the same. [4]The circular logo used in Adirondack did not make the move to Allentown. The current Lehigh Valley mark returns to the traditional Phantoms crest, which features the same four-tiered wing design on the left and right sides as the Flyers’ crest, a subtle nod to the parent organization. [1]For the franchise’s inaugural 2014-15 season in Allentown, the team released a special commemorative logo featuring a large keyhole-style circle and tab, flared with wings that included the seasons 2014 on the left and 2015 on the right, with a banner between them displaying the Phantom-mask logo and the words “Inaugural Season” across the banner. [5]Meaning and Symbolism
The Phantoms’ primary crest depicts a menacing phantom mask with fiercely focused eyes, a design that has been described as roughly two Philadelphia Flyers logos mirrored together. [1] The four-tiered wing design on either side of the current logo directly echoes the wings on the Philadelphia Flyers’ crest, reinforcing the organizational connection between the AHL affiliate and its NHL parent club. [1]Typography and Design
The current Lehigh Valley Phantoms logo pairs the phantom-mask crest with a wordmark reading “Lehigh Valley Phantoms.” The wordmark has been noted for having rough edges along several of the letters, most notably on the final “S” in Phantoms. [1] The team’s official colors are black, orange, electric blue, and white, with the electric blue replacing the purple that had been used since the franchise’s founding.
