Vanderbilt University’s athletics teams, known as the Commodores, compete under a visual identity built around the letter “V” in gold and black. The nickname honors “Commodore” Cornelius Vanderbilt, the shipping and railroad magnate whose gift founded the university, and the athletic teams wear the black and gold of a sea captain.[1]

Design and History

In March 2022, Vanderbilt launched a refreshed visual identity for both the university and its athletics program, marking its first brand redesign since 2003.[2] The centerpiece of the new athletics identity is a bold “Block V” logo, which replaced the “Star V” as the primary athletics mark.[3] The Block V aligns with the proportions of the V used for the university, described as a visual representation of the “One Vanderbilt” spirit.[4]

The “Star V” had served as Vanderbilt Athletics’ primary logo since 2000.[5] Under the 2022 refresh, an updated version of the Star V was retained as a secondary mark for athletics, available for use by teams and on merchandise.[3] The university’s brand guidelines specify that the Star V should not be the main logo featured for any collection, and because it is partially transparent, it should only be used on Vanderbilt’s official colors and neutral backgrounds.[4]

The design work was led by the Boston-based design studio Upstatement, building on a previous collaboration with the university on its website relaunch in 2021.[3] The refresh followed a more than two-year process that included over 500 completed surveys, more than 70 one-on-one interviews, and dozens of workshops and group engagement sessions.[3]

Uniforms featuring the new logos debuted in fall 2023, while athletics facilities and playing fields were scheduled to be updated over the following several years.[3]

Meaning and Symbolism

The anchor is a documented symbol within Vanderbilt football tradition. Football began using the anchor as a symbol of strength and support in 2004 under head coach Bobby Johnson, who wanted the anchor to symbolize unity and strength throughout the program.[6] The anchor is carried onto the field at home games during a pregame ceremony where selected individuals “drop the anchor” at midfield.[6]

The university’s redesigned seal, introduced alongside the 2022 athletics marks, incorporates a strong V mark intended as a connecting symbol across the university, along with oak branches from the Vanderbilt family crest and references to navigation, including a star and compass elements signifying charting a forward course together.[7]

Typography and Design

For the new university wordmark, Vanderbilt commissioned a hand-drawn serifed font unique to the university. The new athletics logos, including the Block V and updated Star V, echo the V from that wordmark with bolder lines and more versatility.[3]

The official athletics color palette includes Flat Gold (Pantone 4024 C, hex CFAE70) and Rich Black (Pantone Black 3C, hex 000000), along with white and additional neutral tones.[4]
