The VCU Rams are the athletic teams of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. The university’s athletics department unveiled a comprehensive new visual identity in March 2014, replacing earlier ram-based logos with a system built around a stylized “VCU” wordmark.
Design and History
VCU’s athletics branding has evolved through several distinct eras. A full-body ram logo was used from 1968 to 1982, followed by a more detailed ram illustration from 1982 to 1989. A computer-generated mark featuring a “V” and horn motif appeared from 1989 to 2003, and a more polished ram graphic was adopted from 2003 to 2014.[1]
On March 5, 2014, VCU unveiled its current visual identity series. Ohio-based Rickabaugh Graphics, which previously designed logos for Ohio State University, Marquette University and the Philadelphia 76ers, was awarded the contract after 30 local, regional and national companies bid on the project.[2][3] The rollout came too late for the 2013-14 academic year, so the new marks debuted for the following season.[2]
The new primary logo, nicknamed the “horned VCU,” features the stylized letters “VCU” with a ram’s horn curling from the top of the “V.”[4][2] The university trademark registration describes the mark as “the stylized letters ‘VCU’ in white and outlined in black and then gold, with a ram’s horn above the ‘V’ curling to the left in white and outlined in black and then gold.”[4] The series also includes secondary logos and a font style.[3]
VCU Brandcenter executive director Vann Graves explained the design shift: “We’ve lessened the idea of the ram, just using an allusion or a nod to the ram’s horn, and again having the movement of the logo, still showing that energy left to right. It’s simple, it’s clean, and at this point, you don’t have to establish VCU as the Rams.”[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The horn integrated into the “V” serves as an allusion to the Ram mascot rather than a literal depiction. Graves noted that the 2014 identity reflects VCU’s transition from a local commuter school to a university with a national presence: “People may not know who the Rams are, but they know who VCU is.”[1]
VCU’s official brand guidelines restrict use of the athletics marks. The university’s brand site states that the only approved spirit mark for institutional and academic units is the Ram Crest, and that “the VCU Ram Horn logo, the Charging Ram and all VCU Rams word and combination marks are NOT to be used as spirit marks or replacements for the academic mark.”[5]
Typography and Design
The 2014 identity includes a dedicated font style as part of the overall package.[3] The primary mark is a text-based wordmark rather than an illustrative mascot, with the ram reduced to a single horn element attached to the “V.”[4] The trademark filing specifies the lettering appears in white with black and gold outlines.[4]
