FC Vorskla Poltava is a Ukrainian football club based in Poltava, competing in the Ukrainian Premier League. The club’s visual identity is built around a heraldic shield emblem that incorporates elements from both the city’s coat of arms and the club’s own history.
Design and History
The current emblem was introduced in 2006, designed by Kyiv-based graphic artist Hleb Hrzhabovskyi, who also authored the previous version of the crest. The redesign was prompted by the need to comply with regulations on club symbolism set by the Football Federation of Ukraine and the Premier League, which required a more standardized logo shape. The earlier, less conventional form had periodically raised questions from governing bodies.[1]
In October 2010, Hrzhabovskyi further refined the emblem. The logo was made slightly shorter and wider, and the text at the top of the crest was changed from English to Ukrainian to meet regulatory requirements. All other heraldic elements were preserved.[1]
The club’s official website describes the emblem’s basic symbols: a round cartouche with the club’s founding year, laurel branches framing the cartouche, a symbolic ribbon with the club’s name, and a football as the main football symbol. The site also notes the correct arrangement of black diamonds on the ball.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to the club’s official description of the emblem, several elements carry specific meaning:
- Bow and arrow: readiness to strike at any moment.[3]
- Shield: a sign of protection and invincibility.[3]
- Football in the center: the main symbol of the sport.[3]
- “1955” above the emblem: the year the team was founded, displayed on a blue background symbolizing birth.[3]
- Four six-pointed stars: taken from the city’s coat of arms, symbolizing light and success.[4]
The emblem combines colors and attributes from both the Poltava city coat of arms and the football club. Defensive stars appear on the right side as an element of the city’s heraldry.[3]
The club’s official colors are white and green, as stated on the club’s website.[4]
