The West Chester Golden Rams are the intercollegiate athletic teams of West Chester University of Pennsylvania, competing in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) at the NCAA Division II level. The university’s athletics program currently fields 24 intercollegiate programs. [1]
Design and History
The Golden Ram logo is described by West Chester University’s official brand guide as “a modern graphic approach to West Chester University athletics.” The university notes that the ram, with its long history at the institution, connects a sense of tradition with the modern era of WCU athletics. [2]
Two versions of the ram logo exist. One version features the ram alone, while the other includes the words “Golden Rams” around its circumference. [2]
The ram identity has deep roots at West Chester. The university’s mascot, Rammy, took over the mascot role from the university’s goat in 1946 and has been an iconic symbol of WCU spirit for more than 70 years. [3] The mascot name was changed to “The Golden Ram” in 1962, and while that name is no longer used for the mascot itself, it stuck as the nickname for the school overall. [4]
A stylized ram head encircled by the words “West Chester University Golden Rams” was registered as a trademark in 2011. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The university’s brand guide states that the Golden Ram logo is a modern graphic approach to WCU athletics, with the ram connecting tradition to the modern era of the athletic program. [2]
Typography and Design
The official colors for the Golden Ram logo are purple (Pantone 269) and gold (Pantone 123), preferably against a white background. [2]
West Chester University’s broader institutional logo, which consists of a three-dimensional type font using the university’s acronym, WCU, sitting on a “base” with the university’s full name, was adopted in May 2013. [6]
