Menlo Security is a cloud security company founded in 2012 and headquartered in Mountain View, California, that provides browser isolation and cloud security services to enterprises. The company’s visual identity has undergone a significant evolution, moving from a light bulb graphic to a modern wordmark that reflects its isolation-powered technology platform.
Design and History
Menlo Security’s original logo featured a light bulb graphic, which the company said spoke to its ingenuity and the idea of a “great idea.” In March 2021, the company announced a complete rebrand, noting that while the old logo communicated inventiveness, it did not emphasize the uniqueness of its offerings or the benefits of its “securing work” brand platform. The rebrand was informed by more than 50 in-depth interviews and extensive secondary research conducted over several months.[1]
The new visual identity was developed by WHM Creative, a B2B tech-focused marketing agency. According to the agency, the team evolved Menlo Security’s legacy light bulb logo into a more modern wordmark. The wordmark splits into two parts, which speaks to Menlo’s isolation-powered technology platform, and the lightning bolt shape of the “N” references the power of the platform.[2]
Menlo Security described the new logo as “a badge of strength” that boldly represents the sureness of its security products. The company noted that the “N” doubling as a lightning bolt was both a nod to the old logo and a tribute to the power the company puts into users’ hands.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The split wordmark is directly tied to Menlo Security’s core technology. The word splitting into two parts represents the company’s isolation-powered technology platform, which separates potentially dangerous web content from user devices.[2] The lightning bolt shape of the “N” serves as a visual reference to the power of the platform and a connection to the company’s earlier light bulb identity.[1]
Typography and Design
WHM Creative deliberately avoided what it called “classic security bandwagon visuals” such as eagles, hawks, owls, and falcons on dark backgrounds. Instead, the agency kept the brand “light, modern, human, and friendly with colors not commonly used in the security space,” a choice intended to convey the concept of ease without explicitly stating it.[2]
The rebrand extended beyond the logo itself. Menlo Security said it developed “a whole new look, feel, and voice” as part of the brand platform update, including a new website designed to showcase its expanded product offerings.[1]
