Beeline (Russian: Билайн), the telecommunications brand operated by PJSC VimpelCom in Russia, has undergone two major visual rebrandings since its launch in the early 1990s. The current identity, introduced in October 2021, replaced a striped circle with a three-dimensional sphere while retaining the brand’s signature black and yellow palette.

Design and History

The Beeline brand was developed by Fabela in late 1993 to position the company as youthful and fun rather than purely technical. The name derives from the English term “beeline,” meaning the most direct route between two points. Early logos from 1992 to 1995 featured the words “Bi” and “Line” in gray with a stylized blue bee placed between them. A later pre-2005 version showed the company name in an italic typeface with a bee image inserted between the letters “и” and “л.” [1] [2]

In 2005, Beeline conducted its first large-scale rebranding. The London agency Wolff Olins developed the well-known yellow and black striped identity, using the Officina Serif typeface, while British designer Miles Newlyn drew the wordmark. The new logo replaced the bee mark with the word “Билайн” accompanied by a round black and yellow striped symbol. The campaign slogan “Live on the bright side” was introduced the same year. [3] [1]

On October 14, 2021, Beeline unveiled its next major rebrand, the first since 2005. The creative agency Contrapunto, part of the BBDO group, developed the updated identity. The flat striped circle became a three-dimensional sphere in the same black and yellow colors, and the brand name began to be written entirely in lowercase as “билайн.” The company explained the lowercase spelling as an effort to be closer to people, emphasizing humanity, simplicity and digitality. The slogan changed from “Live on the bright side” to “On your side.” [4] [1] [5]

Meaning and Symbolism

The black and yellow stripes have been the defining visual element of Beeline’s identity since the 2005 rebrand. The 2021 update preserved these signature colors while giving the mark more dimensionality. According to the company’s press service, the new logo “acquires dynamism and liveliness” while “turning to face the person without losing recognizability.” The brand’s new positioning placed an ordinary person at the center of its ideology, reflected in the slogan “On your side.” [4] [6]

Typography and Design

For the 2021 rebrand, the type foundry Contrast Foundry created two custom typefaces for Beeline. Beeline Sans, designed in four weights, features a slight reversed contrast that combines static and dynamic elements, reflecting the brand’s dual request to feel both “vital” and “digital.” The brand name itself is set in Beeline Sans. A second typeface, Beeline Hand, was developed as a handwriting-style font with individually written letters and slightly uneven baselines to convey warmth and emotionality. The creative team included creative director Maria Doreuli and designer Liza Rasskazova. [3] [7]
