Southern Linc is the wireless communications subsidiary of Southern Company, operating a mission-critical LTE network across Alabama, Georgia and southeastern Mississippi. The company, founded in 1996 and headquartered in Atlanta, was formerly known as SouthernLINC Wireless and traces its roots to a Motorola iDEN network built for utility operations. [1] [2]
Design and History
Southern Linc’s visual identity has undergone two documented changes since the early 2000s. Before 2005, the wireless subsidiary shared the parent company’s logo. [3]
In February 2005, Southern LINC announced a rebrand that introduced a new logo, new colors and a modified name, changing to SouthernLINC Wireless. The new mark was described as a vibrant green circle encompassing a stylized letter “L.” The company said the refreshed brand was meant to appeal to both business owners and consumers alike. [4] [5] The advertising campaign introducing the new identity was created by Atlanta agency Kilgannon McReynolds. [3]
A later trademark filing for the SOUTHERN LINC word mark describes a different design: a triangular design element, comprised of triangles and a white polygon, positioned to the left of the words “SOUTHERN LINC.” The filing, submitted by Southern Communications Services, Inc., does not claim color as a feature of the mark. [6]
In January 2017, Southern Company unveiled a new corporate brand, and Southern LINC was among the subsidiaries that simultaneously illuminated Atlanta headquarters buildings with new logo signage. [7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2005 green circle and flowing “L” mark was introduced as part of a name change to SouthernLINC Wireless, which the company said better described its offerings in the wireless market. [8]
Typography and Design
The current SOUTHERN LINC trademark application describes a word mark accompanied by a triangular design element made of triangles and a white polygon. [6]
