Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) is Japan’s former state telecommunications monopoly, privatized in 1985. Its corporate identity centers on the “Dynamic Loop,” a symbol mark created by graphic designer Yūsaku Kamekura that has represented the company since privatization and remains the core of the NTT Group brand today.
Design and History
Japan’s telecommunications industry had been under government control for 115 years before it was reorganized as the nation’s largest private corporation, a transition that took effect in 1985. In preparation, NTT held a competition in which six companies competed for the corporate identity project. The proposal by PAOS (led by Motoo Nakanishi) together with Dentsu was awarded, and PAOS entrusted the design of the new company logo to graphic designer Yūsaku Kamekura.[1] PAOS lists the project start date as 1984 and the presentation date as 1985, with Kamekura and Kunihiko Hayakawa credited as co-creators.[2]
The new identity was part of a broader strategy proposed by PAOS to NTT’s then director-general, Hisashi Shinto. Rather than focusing on internal training, the approach involved a total reworking of the company’s public image, on the theory that changing external perceptions would in turn help change the mindsets of NTT’s employees. The NTT brand and the “dynamic loop” logo were products of this strategy.[2]
In 2025, NTT announced a renewal of its corporate identity effective July 1 of that year. The company changed its official name from Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation to NTT, Inc., citing a growing gap between its founding-era name and its actual business activities, which had expanded into mobile communications, IT, and overseas operations. The Dynamic Loop developed in 1985 was retained in the new corporate logo, while the logotype font was changed to one already in use in the global market and the color was unified from black to blue.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to NTT’s official description, the Dynamic Loop expresses the dynamism of the company through a single curved line. The small loop at the top of the mark represents NTT’s fundamental ethos of always taking in the voice of its customers and of society as the starting point of its business activities, and of serving a broad function within society.[3] NTT’s CEO reiterated this meaning in announcing the 2025 CI renewal, describing the symbol as a single curved line that expresses dynamism, with the small loop at the top symbolizing the company’s commitment to listening closely to customers and society.[4]
Typography and Design
NTT’s official brand page specifies the corporate color as “NTT Blue,” defined as C100 M50 Y0 K0, R0 G114 B118, #0072bc, and PANTONE 285C.[5] The 2025 CI renewal unified the corporate color from black to blue across the group and adopted a logotype font already in use in the global market.[3] In the 2025 redesign, the NTT DOCOMO Group applied red, a color already strongly associated with its brand in Japan, to the Dynamic Loop for its new corporate logo.[3]
