Telefónica, the Spanish telecommunications group founded in 1924, has used five distinct logos over its history. Its current corporate identity, introduced in April 2021, is built around a blue letter “T” formed by five circles, a symbol that deliberately revives the company’s 1984 mark while simplifying it for the digital era.[1]
Design and History
Telefónica’s first logo, used from its founding until 1984, was a circular emblem featuring a map of Spain surrounded by the company’s full name. In June 1984, the company introduced a new identity designed by the studio Taula de Disseny of Josep Maria Civit, presented at the shareholders’ meeting marking the company’s 60th anniversary. That mark featured a “T” formed by ten light green dots, a reference to telephone keys.[2]
In 1993, the logo was modernized again, tilting the “T,” changing the proportion of the dots, and surrounding the initial with an orbit-like element to reflect the arrival of data networks and mobile services.[3] In 1998, Telefónica abandoned the dotted “T” entirely, adopting a wordmark-only logo that the company itself described as “classic, friendly and human in appearance.” That identity remained in use for more than two decades.[1]
The current logo was unveiled in April 2021 at the company’s shareholders’ meeting. It is the fifth logo in Telefónica’s history and consists of a blue “T” formed by five circles that evoke the 1984 design, simplified and modernized.[3] The new identity was developed by the company’s internal brand team with the support of Lambie-Nairn, the WPP branding consultancy that had collaborated with Telefónica for more than ten years.[4]
In December 2023, Telefónica announced a commemorative centenary logo for 2024, created by Design Bridge and Partners, the WPP branding consultancy that has served as Telefónica’s strategic design agency for more than 13 years and led the 2021 rebrand. The centenary mark features three circular windows emerging from the “T” of the Telefónica logo, symbolizing yesterday, today and tomorrow.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The five circles of the 2021 logo carry multiple layers of meaning for the company. First, the mark represents the fifth logo in Telefónica’s history. Second, the five circles correspond to the five pillars of the company’s strategic action plan. Third, each circle represents one of the “T’s” that constitute the company’s hallmarks: telecommunications, technology, transformation, talent and transcendence.[6]
Telefónica’s president at the time of the 2021 launch, José María Álvarez-Pallete, described the identity as one that “assumes yesterday and projects tomorrow,” reflecting where the company comes from and where it is going.[3]
Typography and Design
The 2021 rebrand introduced a new typeface called Telefónica Sans, designed and optimized for digital environments to allow for greater brand flexibility.[6] The wordmark was simplified and rounded, dropping the italic style of the previous logo to make it more visual and aligned with the new era.[3]
The blue color used in the new identity, specified as Pantone 2386, was chosen to express modernity and technology.[7]
