Uninett AS was a Norwegian state-owned company responsible for operating the country’s National Research and Education Network (NREN). The organization was established in 1976 and headquartered in Trondheim.[1] On 1 January 2022, Uninett was merged with NSD (Norwegian Centre for Research Data) and Unit (the Directorate for ICT and Joint Services in Higher Education and Research) to form the new government agency Sikt, the Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research.[2][3]
Design and History
The Uninett logo was a horizontal lockup combining a red arrow-like symbol with the wordmark “UNINETT.” The symbol file was named “Uninett_pil_rod.svg,” where “pil” is Norwegian for arrow and “rød” means red, indicating the mark’s red arrow motif.[4] The full logo file, “UNINETT_logo.svg,” was used as the standard brand lockup on Uninett web properties.[4]
The logo was documented on the English Wikipedia entry for Uninett as a 178 × 49 pixel SVG file.[5] The mark was used across Uninett’s digital services, including its NAV network monitoring software, where the red arrow symbol appeared as a footer logo.[4]
Following the 2022 merger, the Uninett identity was retired. The new Sikt brand was developed by Reklamekollektivet together with Netlife Bergen, which was elected as lead agency for building the new brand identity for Sikt.[6] Sikt’s current visual identity uses a primary logo featuring the name alongside an icon, with defined color variants called “Sikt Mørk” (Sikt Dark) and “Sikt Lys” (Sikt Light).[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The red arrow element, confirmed by the file name “Uninett_pil_rod.svg,” served as the graphic component of the identity.[4]
