Japan Travel Bureau, known today as JTB Corp., is one of Japan’s oldest and largest travel organizations, tracing its roots to 1912. Its visual identity has evolved through several distinct phases, from an early pictorial emblem to the dynamic three-letter wordmark that remains familiar today.
Design and History
The organization’s first corporate emblem was established in 1916, designed by graphic designer 杉浦非水 (Hisui Sugiura), who had earlier created the cover art for the bureau’s magazine Tourist. The badge depicted “JTB” with a sailing boat beneath snow-capped Mount Fuji, a design that tied the bureau’s identity to iconic Japanese imagery.[1]
In 1963, when the organization was incorporated as 株式会社日本交通公社 (Japan Travel Bureau, Inc.), a new company emblem was introduced. This mark arranged the lowercase letters “jtb” in parallel, with a small circle placed inside the dot of the “j” that was intended to evoke the rising sun of Japan’s national flag, particularly for foreign audiences.[1]
A significant rebranding occurred in October 1988, when the company changed its public name from 日本交通公社 (Nihon Kōtsū Kōsha) to the acronym JTB. The new JTB mark and its corporate color, called “Dynamic Red,” were described by the company as expressing a “youthful and progressive” corporate image. The rebrand was promoted with the tagline “For Your Travelife” and a major advertising campaign.[1]
In 2023, JTB undertook its first rebranding in 35 years. The new corporate logo, introduced in April 2023, kept the dynamic form of the three letters “JTB” unchanged but shifted from a two-color presentation to a monochromatic logotype. The design uses 12 background colors inspired by the Earth, including land and nature tones, to express diversity and possibility as the company’s business scope expands beyond travel.[2][3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The JTB mark, featuring the three letters in a dynamic, flowing arrangement, was officially described by the company as expressing “powerful dynamism” and the stance of a youthful, progressive corporation. The company also stated that the mark conveys the emotional richness of “joy,” “inspiration,” and “fun” associated with travel.[3]
The 2023 rebranding retained this dynamic lettering while replacing the previous two-color scheme with a monochrome logotype set against a palette of 12 colors drawn from the natural world, a deliberate shift to communicate the breadth of JTB’s evolving business portfolio.[2][4]
Typography and Design
The 2023 corporate logo retains the bold contours of the JTB lettering from the previous mark, preserving its dynamic design while simplifying the color treatment to a single tone. The monochrome letters are designed to sit against a variety of background colors reflecting nature’s palette.[5]
