FNBO, the shortened brand name for First National Bank of Omaha, uses a logo built around a numeral one enclosed in a circle paired with the lowercase wordmark “fnbo.” The mark was registered as a trademark by First National of Nebraska, Inc., with the official description reading: “The mark consists of a design of the numeral one in a circle and the word ‘fnbo’.” The trademark filing also lists the pseudo mark “ONE FIRST NATIONAL BANK OMAHA,” confirming the numeral’s direct reference to the bank’s full name.[1]
Design and History
FNBO underwent a rebrand in 2019, led by the Omaha-based strategy and identity firm Daake. The agency describes the effort as a “brand evolution” that “refined FNBO’s identity into something timeless yet modern, preserving its institutional strength while signaling innovation.” Daake has continued its creative partnership with FNBO since the rebrand, working on brand and product campaigns, sub-brands, and a transformation of the bank’s headquarters.[2]
The trademark application for the current “1 FNBO” mark was filed on January 11, 2019, and registered on August 13, 2019, aligning with the rebrand timeline.[3] The numeral-one-in-a-circle device was not new to the bank’s visual identity: an earlier trademark for “1 FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF OMAHA,” also owned by First National of Nebraska, Inc., describes the same “design of the numeral ‘1’ in a circle” paired with the full bank name.[4]
FNBO was founded in 1857 by brothers Herman and Augustus Kountze, and the bank describes itself as “the great big, small bank,” a tagline that Daake says it has helped maintain as part of the brand’s authentic voice.[5][2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The numeral one in a circle serves as a direct visual reference to “First National,” the bank’s founding name, with the trademark pseudo mark confirming the connection.[1] The trademark filing notes that “color is not claimed as a feature of the mark,” meaning the logo’s protection extends to its design elements rather than any specific color scheme.[3]
For its 165th anniversary in 2023, FNBO created a special anniversary logo that incorporated the image of geese in flight, drawn from the “Spirit of Nebraska’s Wilderness” sculpture park at the bank’s headquarters. The bank explained that geese were chosen because they are “loyal, mating for life, demonstrating a deep and lasting commitment, much like FNBO has to our company, our customers, our employees and the communities we serve.”[6]
Typography and Design
The FNBO wordmark uses lowercase letters in a clean sans-serif style, creating a compact four-letter identity. The trademark registration describes the mark as consisting of “a design of the numeral one in a circle and the word ‘fnbo’,” with the circle classified under the USPTO design code for “circles as carriers or as single line borders.”[1] No specific typeface or designer attribution for the wordmark has been publicly documented beyond Daake’s role in the 2019 rebrand.[2]
