Bank Mandiri, Indonesia’s largest state-owned bank, has used a visual identity built around a flowing wave symbol and the wordmark “mandiri” in lowercase since its 2008 rebrand. The current logo, in use since 2016, retains this core structure while refining the typography and color application.
Design and History
Bank Mandiri was formed on 2 October 1998 through the merger of four state banks, and its first logo was used from that date until January 2008.[1] That original mark featured a wavy ribbon in blue with a small amount of gold.[2]
In January 2008, Bank Mandiri introduced a new logo as part of a broader transformation program. The new mark replaced the blue ribbon with a golden liquid-wave symbol, and the wordmark was set in bolder, lowercase, thick lettering.[3] The bank also dropped the word “bank” from its brand name, using simply “Mandiri.”[4] According to then-Director of Consumer Finance Omar S. Anwar, the removal of “bank” aligned with Bank Indonesia regulations that would allow banks to sell non-bank products, and with the bank’s plans to acquire non-bank companies.[3]
The 2008 redesign was driven partly by an AC Nielsen survey indicating the old logo did not stand out compared to competitors.[4] Bank Mandiri selected the brand consultancy Brand Union from among five candidates for the rebranding work.[3] State Minister for State-Owned Enterprises Sofyan Djalil also noted that feng shui considerations played a role in the change.[2]
A further refinement of the logo appeared in 2016, as documented in the bank’s 2016 annual report.[5] The 2016 version kept the golden wave and lowercase wordmark but introduced a refreshed, more substantial typeface, described in a semiotic analysis as a meaningful refresh of the identity.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to Bank Mandiri’s official brand guidelines, the identity mark is designed as a “golden liquid wave” (gelombang emas cair), which signifies hope for prosperity for customers together with Mandiri. The position of the wave above the wordmark, combined with its flowing form, conveys progress and prosperity.[7]
The use of lowercase letters in the wordmark reflects a friendly personality and the aspiration to be closer to customers while remaining simple.[7] At the 2008 launch, Omar S. Anwar described the golden liquid wave as a symbol of financial wealth in Asia.[3]
Typography and Design
Bank Mandiri’s official brand guidelines specify two signature colors: Mandiri Blue (Pantone 654C, RGB 0-61-121) and Mandiri Yellow (Pantone 7549C, RGB 255-183-0).[7] The guidelines state that the blue is the signature color to be emphasized across brand applications, supported by a secondary palette that includes Mandiri Sky Blue, Mandiri Orange, and Mandiri Grey.[7]
A semiotic study of the 2016 logo identified the logotype as set in the Myriad Pro typeface, with the lowercase lettering symbolizing a friendly attitude toward serving customers warmly and wholeheartedly.[6] The same study noted that the golden wave combines yellow and orange tones, symbolizing wealth and prosperity.[6]
