MLC Limited is an Australian wealth management and superannuation business with roots dating back to the 1880s. The company’s visual identity has been defined for decades by one central motif: the nest egg, a symbol introduced in 1989 to represent the growth and protection MLC provides to its customers.[1]
Design and History
MLC traces its origins to The Mutual Life and Citizens’ Assurance Company Limited, which became known by the initials MLC.[1] The company operated as the wealth management division of the National Australia Bank (NAB) for a period, providing investment, insurance and private wealth services.[2]
In 1989, MLC launched its “nest egg” logo, a symbol of the growth and protection the company provides to customers.[1] The nest egg became the defining element of the MLC brand and remained in use for decades.
Following the May 2021 IOOF acquisition of MLC Wealth, a new parent company name, Insignia Financial, was created. The new Insignia Financial logo incorporated both the IOOF rings and the MLC egg, with green hues representing newness, prosperity and growth.[3] The brand identity was developed in partnership with the brand agency Principals and won Gold at the BETTER FUTURE Sydney Design Awards 2022 in the Graphic Design, Identity and Branding, Finance category.[3]
In October 2025, Insignia Financial relaunched the MLC brand after a five-year absence from the market, repositioning it as a “super-into-retirement” brand and re-adopting the iconic nest egg logo in its branding.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The nest egg symbol, introduced in 1989, was explicitly designed to represent the growth and protection MLC provides to its customers.[1] The motif draws on the familiar financial metaphor of saving for the future, tying the brand directly to its core business of helping Australians build retirement savings.
When the Insignia Financial identity was created in 2022, the design deliberately combined the IOOF rings with the MLC egg to pay tribute to the heritage of both organisations coming together.[3]
