Interac is a Canadian payments and digital information exchange company that has operated since 1984, providing debit payment processing, e-Transfer services, and digital verification solutions across the country. The company’s visual identity has evolved through several distinct phases, most recently with a 2021 brand refresh that introduced the current square-format brandmark. [1]
Design and History
Interac’s current logo, introduced in 2021 as part of the “InLife” brand platform, consists of the angled text “Interac” in black with a stylized hand design below the “In” letter, both set against an ochre square backdrop with rounded corners. The official trademark registration specifies the ochre colour as HEX FFB92A and the black as HEX 2D2926. [2]
The 2021 refresh was developed by Toronto agency Zulu Alpha Kilo, with the stated goal of humanizing and adding warmth to the payment technology brand. The campaign introduced curated lifestyle imagery and the tagline treatment “InLife,” which visually incorporates the Interac name into the word “life.” Wain Choi, Executive Creative Director at Zulu Alpha Kilo, explained that “by incorporating the name Interac into ‘life’ we visually reflect this.” [3]
Prior to the current mark, Interac’s most notable visual identity was introduced in 2007, when the company deployed a new icon featuring a yellow-and-black armoured truck. The campaign, developed by agency Axmith McIntyre Wicht, used the truck image to embody “your money, security, accessibility, and reliability,” according to creative director Brian Howlett. The 2007 refresh also introduced the slogan “Everyday Simple.” [4]
Interac’s brand evolution timeline, as documented by the company, shows a series of positioning shifts: the “Be in the black” campaign in 2014, the “Own your world” platform in 2017, and the “InLife” platform in 2021. [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The hand design in the current Interac logo is documented in the trademark registration, which describes it as a “hand design” positioned below the “In” letter of the wordmark. The trademark filing also notes the mark’s Vienna classification includes “hands, folded hands, fingers, handprints or fingerprints, arms” as a figurative element. [2]
The “InLife” branding concept was designed to depict consumers being in control of using their money, aimed at a younger, more tech-savvy audience. [5] The company described the platform as demonstrating “when you’re in control of your money, it’s easier to make the most out of life.” [3]
Typography and Design
The current Interac logo uses angled, stylized lettering for the wordmark, as described in the trademark registration: “a visual design wholly comprising of angled text ‘Interac’, in black.” The text sits within an ochre square with rounded corners, and the hand design appears below the “In” letter. [2]
In 2022, Interac introduced a sonic logo as part of a broader audio branding ecosystem, developed by the audio agency Sixieme Son. The sonic identity was launched alongside the “We Geek Out” campaign, which aimed to reintroduce Interac as “the digital authentication and payments technology company” behind its services. [6]
