Meaning and history

The KARL LAGERFELD identity combines a bold capital-letter wordmark with a small profile silhouette. In a 2011 report on the launch of the KARL label, WELT described the logo as carrying Karl Lagerfeld’s silhouette, including dark glasses and a hair braid. That account links the symbol to the designer rather than to an abstract fashion motif.

The image shows the name arranged on two lines, with a compact profile tucked beside the lettering. It is a direct, name-led composition: the wordmark identifies the label, while the profile supplies a recognizable portrait element. The 2011 report documents the silhouette’s use for the KARL label, not the date this particular arrangement first appeared.

The brand was founded in 1984 by Karl Lagerfeld. Its name and portrait-based identity draw on the designer’s public image, which France Inter characterized as Lagerfeld being “his own logo.” The publication described his familiar look, including dark glasses and a high white collar; the collar was part of his personal style, not a feature visible in this logo.

Wordmark and silhouette

The lettering is heavy, uppercase and tightly arranged in the displayed image. The profile is much smaller, so it supports rather than competes with the name. Both elements appear in black against white, producing a high-contrast, monochrome mark. These are visible features of the image, not evidence of a particular typeface or color specification.

The KARL label was announced in October 2011. WELT reported that its women’s collection was planned for spring 2012 and that KARL LAGERFELD PARIS was presented for autumn 2012. These launches establish a documented point in the brand’s identity history, but do not establish when the logo shown here was first introduced.

The brand behind the name

KARL LAGERFELD is a fashion and lifestyle brand founded by the designer, who died in 2019. Trade publication Vogue Business describes its market positioning as “masstige,” or aspirational and accessible, rather than traditional haute luxury.

G-III Apparel Group completed its purchase of the remaining 81 per cent of the brand on 2 June 2022, becoming its sole owner, according to the company’s announcement. The brand remains active, with its design team listed on its official site. This ownership and continuing brand activity do not, by themselves, establish that every logo arrangement shown in historical material is currently used.
