ZEGNA is the name of the flagship brand of the Ermenegildo Zegna Group. Its identity centres on a single all-caps wordmark, introduced in a December 2021 rebrand, and a two-stripe signifier inspired by Road 232 in Piedmont. The company’s rebranding release announced the change as part of a move to bring its labels together under one name and said the retail identity rollout was planned for completion during 2022. The release describes the updated identity.

Meaning and history

The name behind the brand traces to a wool mill founded by Ermenegildo Zegna in Trivero, Piedmont, in 1910. The business name later changed: FashionNetwork reports that the house traded as Fratelli Zegna di Angelo in the 1930s and that Ermenegildo Zegna became the name used by a later generation. In December 2021, the brand adopted the shorter ZEGNA name for its unified identity. FashionNetwork’s report covers the rebrand and name history.

The archive’s composite presents three distinct looks: a name paired with a seal-like emblem, a serif wordmark without an emblem, and the all-caps ZEGNA wordmark. The image shows how the composition becomes simpler over those stages; its labels are not independent evidence for when each earlier design was introduced.

1950 – 1984

This stage pairs the full Ermenegildo Zegna name in serif lettering with a small circular emblem below it. The emblem includes lettering around a central crest-like device, while the word “Cloth” sits above the name. Together, the elements make this the most detailed and vertically arranged of the three archive stages.

1975 – 2021

Here the emblem and the smaller “Cloth” line are gone. The full Ermenegildo Zegna name appears by itself in serif lettering on one line, making the wordmark the sole focal point. This is the longer-name design represented in the archive before the 2021 move to ZEGNA.

2021 – Today

The all-caps ZEGNA wordmark replaces the longer name and is visibly more compact. The stage image shows the wordmark alone; the company’s 2021 materials also introduced a separate two-stripe signifier inspired by Road 232, the road built by the founder in the Piedmont mountains. The company describes the font as modernized and identifies artistic director Alessandro Sartori in connection with the identity. The brand page explains the Road 232 reference, and the rebranding release documents the launch.

The stripe’s colour is described differently across the company’s materials: the 2021 release calls it vicuña-coloured, while the brand page uses foliage. The stable element is the two-stripe form and its association with Road 232, rather than a single consistently named shade.

The 2021 wordmark-and-stripe identity remains in use in current ZEGNA campaign material. A current campaign page displays the brand identity; the earlier full-name wordmark is a historical stage rather than the present brand name.
