Meaning and history

EXO is a South Korean group formed by SM Entertainment and debuted in 2012. Its name comes from “exoplanet,” a planet outside the solar system, as Korea JoongAng Daily explains. Rather than relying on one unchanged emblem, EXO’s visual history uses distinct marks associated with album eras. The sequence below shows recurring geometric forms alongside sharply different treatments, from a debut hexagon to a dashboard and faceted diamond.
2012 – 2013

The MAMA-era mark pairs a divided hexagon and prominent X with the EXO name beneath it. Its clean, angular construction establishes a geometric starting point for the later album marks. EXO’s debut EP, MAMA, arrived in April 2012; the academic chronology of EXO logo variations documents the associated visual sequence.
2013

The XOXO stage trades the debut’s enclosing hexagon for heart and circle forms, each built around an X. This makes the mark softer and more emblematic while preserving a recurring letterform. XOXO was released on June 3, 2013, according to the KBS discography.
2013 – 2014

The Miracles in December mark is a red linear design: a rhombus-like outline meets three strokes extending from its left side. Its color and open-line construction contrast with the earlier black-and-white geometric emblems. KBS lists the winter release in EXO’s discography.
2014 – 2015

For Overdose, the visual sequence returns to a hexagonal frame, but its interior becomes a dense labyrinth around an open center. The intricate linework is a marked contrast with the simpler debut geometry. The EP was released in May 2014, as recorded in the academic logo chronology.
2015

The Exodus-era emblem brings back the hexagon, dividing its interior into broad triangular and diamond-shaped sections. Compared with Overdose, its strong partitions make the mark feel more open and orderly. EXODUS was EXO’s second studio album, released in 2015, according to KBS.
2015 – 2016

Sing for You shifts from the recurring geometric badge to a framed, text-led treatment. The academic chronology includes this stage among the album-specific logo variations, showing how the visual sequence could move beyond a hexagonal symbol.
2016 – 2017

The EX’ACT mark turns the album lettering into a geometric arrangement, with characters organized around a hexagonal structure. Instead of a separate icon paired with a name, the letters themselves supply the puzzle-like shape. EX’ACT was released on June 9, 2016, according to KBS.
2017 – 2018

The War stage replaces enclosed geometry with a radiating star or explosion form. Its outward-reaching lines make a strong contrast with the compact frames and letter-based marks of earlier eras. KBS dates The War to July 2017.
2018

For DON’T MESS UP MY TEMPO, a circular speedometer becomes the central image. The red needle and EXO lettering stand out against the instrument’s gray and black details. The album was released on November 2, 2018, according to KBS.
2018 – 2019

Love Shot returns to a compact emblem, this time rendered as a faceted diamond with a sharp downward point and contrasting planes. It replaces the speedometer’s mechanical detail with a jewel-like silhouette. LOVE SHOT was the repackage of EXO’s fifth album, released on December 13, 2018, rather than a separate sixth studio album, according to KBS.
2019 – today

The Obsession-era mark uses crossed flagstaffs and two dark flag shapes, a clear departure from the faceted Love Shot emblem. The album’s EXO versus X-EXO concept is reflected in this divided, crossed composition. OBSESSION, EXO’s sixth studio album, was released on November 27, 2019, according to KBS. This is a historical stage: EXO returned with the REVERXE era in January 2026, as Yonhap reported.
Current identity: REVERXE
REVERXE, EXO’s eighth studio album, was released on January 19, 2026, with six participating members, according to Yonhap. That release marks a later identity era than the 2019 Obsession stage; the archive’s sequence of album marks should not be read as one permanent logo.
Color

The stages vary in palette rather than following a single consistent color scheme. Black and white recur in the geometric marks, while the Miracles in December design uses red and the Love Shot image emphasizes cool, faceted shading. The speedometer adds red details against a dark instrument face. These are visual features of individual era marks, not evidence of a single fixed palette.
Lettering and shapes
EXO’s visual sequence is defined more by changing forms than by one signature typeface. The examples range from a divided hexagon and maze-like frame to a letter-built geometric mark, a radiating shape, an instrument dial and a diamond. Across these shifts, angular construction and the EXO name connect otherwise distinct album-era identities.
