The Berkeley Group is a British property developer and house-builder founded in 1976 by Tony Pidgley CBE and Jim Farrer in Weybridge, Surrey. The company focuses on large-scale brownfield regeneration projects across London, Birmingham and the South of England. Today the Group operates under two customer brands, Berkeley and Berkeley Living, plus two specialist brands, Berkeley Commercial and Berkeley Partnership. [1]
Design and History
Until March 2026, Berkeley Group operated under six market-leading sub-brands: Berkeley, St George, St James, St Joseph, St Edward and St William. In 2026, to mark 50 years of Berkeley Group in the property development market, the Group brought all joint ventures and sub-brands together under the single Berkeley identity. This created one core brand with a long-established reputation for quality and placemaking. As part of this change, the St George and St Edward names were retired and absorbed into the main Berkeley brand. [2] [3] [4]
The Berkeley brand was founded in 1976 and today is one of the UK’s best-known property developers of new homes. Over time the company expanded into several brands representing key partnerships with other organisations, while the Berkeley brand continued to represent medium to large-scale property developments across London and the South of England. [5]
The current Berkeley Group logo features a wordmark accompanied by an abstract symbol. The mark uses a palette of gray and red tones, with the red appearing in the symbol element. [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Berkeley Group’s official brand tagline is “Designed for life,” which appears in registered figurative trademarks for the Berkeley, St George, St James and St Edward brands filed in July 2010. [7]
Earlier registered trademarks from the company include “BERKELEY HOMES BUILT TO APPRECIATE” (filed March 1988) and “Berkeley HOMES QUALITY TO APPRECIATE” (filed March 1993), as well as the word mark “A PASSION FOR BUILDING” (filed December 1996). These marks reflect the company’s long-standing emphasis on quality and appreciation in its brand messaging. [7]
Typography and Design
The Berkeley Group logo uses a sans-serif wordmark for the company name. The design includes an abstract symbol element alongside the wordmark, with the overall mark rendered in gray and red. [6]
Grid London, a creative agency, has partnered with the London and international divisions of Berkeley Group to shape brand identities and marketing campaigns targeting key global markets, with a particular focus on the Middle East. [8]
