Martin Marietta is an American supplier of construction aggregates and heavy building materials, operating more than 500 locations across 29 states, Canada and The Bahamas.[1] The company’s visual identity was most recently shaped by a 2014 rebrand that accompanied its acquisition of Texas Industries (TXI), which prompted a repositioning of the business under the shorter name “Martin Marietta.”[2]
Design and History
Martin Marietta Materials was incorporated on November 12, 1993, after Lockheed Martin Corporation transferred its construction aggregates business to the newly created entity.[3] The company was spun off as an independent, publicly traded company in 1996.[4]
In 2014, following the TXI acquisition, Martin Marietta was rebranded with a new name, logo and website, according to Ward Nye, then president, CEO and chairman.[5] The company dropped “Materials” from its public-facing name and became known simply as “Martin Marietta.”[5]
The rebrand was developed with G&S Business Communications, which approached the design firm eatsleepthink to assist with the repositioning.[2] The design team sought to capture the brand’s heritage by retaining equity from the existing logo, which featured two M’s, one on top of the other. The new identity kept a similar arrangement but had the M’s overlap to create a mountainous landscape of aggregate piles.[2]
The new mark was filed as a trademark on December 12, 2014, with first use in commerce dated November 1, 2014. The trademark registration describes the mark as consisting of “two intersecting M’s” followed by the words “MARTIN MARIETTA,” with “MARTIN” stacked directly above “MARIETTA.”[6] The mark was registered on June 6, 2017.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The overlapping M’s in the current Martin Marietta logo are designed to evoke a mountainous landscape of aggregate piles, directly referencing the company’s core business of crushed stone, sand and gravel.[2] The design intentionally preserves visual continuity with the earlier two-M marque while updating the concept to reflect the materials the company produces.[2]
Typography and Design
The trademark registration for the current mark describes the wordmark as “MARTIN MARIETTA” in stacked form, with “MARTIN” positioned directly above “MARIETTA.”[6] The intersecting M monogram precedes the stacked wordmark.[6] Specific typeface and color specifications for the current identity are not publicly documented in the available sources.
