Binance USD (BUSD) is a USD-backed stablecoin launched in September 2019 through a partnership between Binance and Paxos Trust Company, with approval from the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS).[1] The token is pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar, with Paxos serving as issuer and custodian of the fiat reserves.[2]
Design and History
BUSD was announced on September 5, 2019, as a Binance-branded stablecoin issued by Paxos.[3] The visual identity of BUSD is directly tied to the Binance brand, using the exchange’s established logo system rather than introducing a separate mark. The Binance logo itself was designed in the summer of 2017, about 16 months before the exchange launched, and was created to represent the bids and asks on the exchange using two squares, echoing the “binary” word in the name Binance (Binary Finance).[4]
Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao has described how the logo evolved from early experiments: the designer Tang produced various iterations, and the final mark placed one diagonal square on top of another with a slight overlap, creating a “digital eight” shape. Thickened lines made the design work visually, and importantly, the overlap created three smaller blocks in the middle that formed a chain.[5]
BUSD’s identity has remained consistent with the Binance brand since its launch. In February 2023, after regulatory action caused minting to cease, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao distanced the exchange from the token, noting that BUSD was not issued by Binance and that Paxos had an agreement to use the Binance brand.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Binance logo’s core symbol is built from two overlapping squares, representing the bids and asks on the exchange. The name Binance itself is a portmanteau of “binary” and “finance,” and the two-square construction echoes that binary concept.[4] The overlap of the squares creates three smaller blocks that form a chain, a detail Zhao highlighted as a meaningful outcome of the design process.[5]
Typography and Design
Binance’s primary brand color is a warm gold, documented as #F0B90B, which is used across the exchange’s visual identity.[7] The BUSD token icon follows the same gold-on-dark treatment used throughout the Binance ecosystem, appearing on platforms such as CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko.[8] No official documentation specifies a dedicated typeface for the BUSD wordmark separate from Binance’s standard branding.
