NEAR Protocol is a layer-one blockchain platform developed by the NEAR Foundation, known for its sharded, proof-of-stake architecture and focus on making Web3 accessible to a broader audience. The project’s visual identity centers on an abstract “N” symbol that doubles as an infinity mark, a motif that has carried through the brand’s evolution.
Design and History
The NEAR Protocol logo is built around an infinity “N” symbol, a mark that had already accumulated significant brand equity before the most recent redesign. In 2022, London-based design agency Fold7 created the event identity for NEARCON, NEAR’s flagship conference, placing the brand’s iconic “N” infinity symbol at the center of a modular visual system that could expand and contract across formats, including directional signage at the event space. [1]
Fold7 subsequently developed a full visual identity for NEAR, built around the concept of the “Infinite Canvas.” According to the agency, the design system was derived from NEAR’s “dimension-warping infinity symbol” and includes a new wordmark, bespoke iconography, and grid points that form the canvas structure. The identity was inspired by the theme “Show the Way,” reflecting NEAR’s goal of making blockchain technology more human and accessible. [2]
The redesign retained the existing infinity “N” symbol rather than replacing it, acknowledging the equity the mark had built for the company. The new system amplifies the symbol’s geometric construction across brand elements, using familiar UI-inspired components that attach to the grid points to support the platform’s user-friendly ethos. [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The infinity “N” symbol is the central motif of the NEAR identity. The Infinite Canvas, derived from this symbol, is described by Fold7 as representing the brand’s scalability and creativity. The grid points that make up the canvas originate from the infinity “N” construction, embodying the platform’s limitless potential. [3]
Color plays a significant role in the identity. The previous NEAR brand lacked an ownable color, so after competitor research and workshops, a vibrant green tone was chosen. This green was selected to represent NEAR’s presence at tech events, contrast well with white and black backgrounds, and align with the brand’s goals. [3]
Typography and Design
The Fold7 identity introduced a custom lowercase wordmark for NEAR, paired with the FK Grotesk typeface. The design system uses a grid derived from the infinity “N” symbol, with motion-led applications reinforcing NEAR’s mission to engage developers and reflect its dynamic Web3 community. [4]
