Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is a cryptocurrency that forked from Bitcoin in August 2017. Its visual identity has evolved from an orange mark closely resembling Bitcoin’s logo to a distinct green circular emblem, a change driven by the need to differentiate the two currencies in the minds of users and investors.
Design and History
Bitcoin Cash’s earliest logo was orange and closely mirrored the Bitcoin symbol, with the “B” tilted in the opposite direction. This similarity caused confusion, as the orange rectangular logo did not fit well in square icon spaces and could be mistaken for Bitcoin Core’s mark when cropped into a circle.[1]
In late 2017, community members began advocating for a green version of the logo to differentiate Bitcoin Cash from Bitcoin. A pull request to the Bitcoin Unlimited client explained that green “is commonly associated with cash which is the number one property we are aiming for in Bitcoin Cash.”[1] The discussion noted that BitPay, Coinbase, and major wallets had already adopted the green logo, and that the orange mark was “too similar” to Bitcoin’s.[1][2]
On August 1, 2018, at CoinGeek.com’s #BitcoinRebirth party in London, a “new” Bitcoin Cash logo was unveiled to an audience of developers, miners, merchants, and media. The reveal was presented through a retro Streetfighter-style video.[3] CoinDesk reported that the new logo “attempts to hammer home the message that the bitcoin name should be reclaimed,” with the video showing a fighter using a samurai sword to cut the “cash” part of the project’s logo.[4]
In December 2018, the official bitcoincash.org website was redesigned and included a dedicated graphics section where users could download official BCH logos in multiple sizes and formats, including vector SVG files.[5][2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The current Bitcoin Cash logo is a green circle containing a white “B” symbol tilted to the left, a deliberate contrast to Bitcoin’s orange circle with a right-tilted “B.”[6] The green color was chosen specifically to distinguish Bitcoin Cash from Bitcoin and to reinforce the “cash” concept, as green is commonly associated with money in the United States.[1]
The official color for the Bitcoin Cash brand is recorded as Bitcoin Cash Green, with the hex value #0AC18E, alongside white (#FFFFFF).[7]
Typography and Design
When the bitcoincash.org graphics section was created in early 2018, the site adopted the Ubuntu font family, including Ubuntu Bold, for its logo and wordmark assets. The pull request that introduced the graphics section noted the use of “google fonts ubuntu font” and “ubuntu bold” for the site’s typography.[2] The redesigned bitcoincash.org site also made the Ubuntu bold and italic fonts available for download alongside the logo assets.[5]
