Neo is an open-source blockchain platform that positions itself as the foundation for a “smart economy,” a vision it has pursued since its rebranding from Antshares in 2017. The Neo visual identity, most notably its green “doorway” logo, was introduced in October 2019 alongside a new website, marking a significant shift in how the project presents itself to developers and the broader public.
Design and History
On October 17, 2019, Neo unveiled a new logo and official website, a move the Neo Foundation described as a direct visual expression of its mission to become the infrastructure for the next-generation internet and the smart economy. The announcement emphasized that the new identity retained classic Neo elements while introducing innovations to better communicate the brand’s vision.[1]
The 2019 rebrand was a collaborative effort. Design studio DesignCoral worked with Neo and the agency R/GA to launch the new visual system, which included the logo redesign, website, and social media assets. The project aimed to reflect the youthfulness of the Neo brand and a contemporary sense of technology.[2]
The official Neo Brand Book, published in October 2019, documents the identity’s core components. The logo features a horizontal lockup as the preferred format, with a vertical lockup and a standalone “Neo doorway” symbol reserved for space-constrained applications.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The central symbol of the Neo logo is the “Neo doorway.” According to the official brand manual, while depicting the first letter of the Neo logo, the doorway also symbolizes Neo’s role as the connection to the smart economy.[4] DesignCoral similarly describes the door-shaped logo as symbolizing Neo’s commitment to becoming the gateway to the smart economy.[2]
The brand’s colors are intentionally chosen to illustrate two characteristics of the Neo blockchain: young and ever-growing.[3] The primary palette consists of Neo Green and Dark Green, with the official brand book listing Pantone 3385C for Neo Green and Pantone 2943C for Dark Green.[3] The DesignCoral team noted that white and the new green were primarily used to highlight Neo’s sense of technology and modernity.[2]
Typography and Design
The Neo Brand Book specifies that lowercase letters are used in the logo, a choice inspired by the latest graphic design trends to deliver a smooth, non-intrusive, and consistent user experience.[3] The brand manual also provides guidance on logo usage, stating that a dark or plain white background is preferred in most circumstances, and that white or black versions of the logo may be used when default colors are difficult to read against other backgrounds.[4]
