California Baptist University (CBU) is a private Christian university in Riverside, California, founded in 1950 as California Baptist College. The institution adopted its current name in 1998. Its visual identity is built around a bell tower icon, a CBU lettermark, and a palette of blue, white, and gold.
Design and History
The current university logo locks up a bell tower icon to the left of the CBU lettermark. It is the primary and official logo for California Baptist University and serves as the default identifying mark for all general institutional and brand use. A formal lockup bearing the full university name is available for circumstances where the CBU abbreviation is insufficient for proper brand identification, such as branding use outside the Riverside area. A simplified one-color version is reserved for applications like engraving, laser etching, and single-color printing. The university logo hierarchy places the university logo and the formal horizontal logo as Tier 1 primary institutional marks, the only marks approved for official letterhead, name tags, email signatures, and business cards. [1] [2]
According to the official CBU brand guide, the original and still current bell tower icon, CBU lettermark, and Lancers wordmark were designed in 2003. In 2017, the lowercase CBU letters were replaced with uppercase block letters, a change driven by the need for a center-court logo on the basketball court at the newly opened Events Center. In 2021, the CBU logo received subtle letterform improvements to optimize its appearance and clarity, especially on smaller digital screen sizes. The 2021 update introduced taller notches or ink traps, wider outlines, and tighter kerning. The stacked logo was discontinued in 2022. [1] [3]
The bell tower icon references the James Building on the Riverside campus, which has served as a symbol for CBU since 1955. The building’s bell tower and cross are described by the university as an iconic symbol of CBU. [4]
CBU Athletics maintains a separate visual identity built on three foundational graphic elements: the CBU lettermark, the Lancers wordmark, and a shield icon. In contrast to the university logo, the bell tower icon is excluded from the athletics logo to offer more balance and flexibility in situations where the logo may appear, such as team uniforms and scoreboards. The athletic lettermark is deliberately designed to showcase all three official university colors. [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
Blue, white, and gold are the official primary colors of the CBU brand. The brand guide specifies Pantone 655 (HEX #002554) for blue, Pantone 000 (HEX #FFFFFF) for white, and Pantone 132 (HEX #A07400) for gold. The guide recommends designs use 60% blue, 30% white, and 10% gold, noting that gold is inherently a rich color and should be used sparingly. [5]
The bell tower silhouette in the university logo is always white, never hollow or knocked-out, with the exception of the one-color CBU logo. [1]
Typography and Design
Proxima Nova is the primary typeface used in all CBU marketing communications, with Sabon serving as a secondary typeface for applications requiring elegance, such as awards, diplomas, and formal event invitations. Arial and Garamond are free alternate font options that should only be used if access to Proxima Nova or Sabon is unavailable. [6]
The brand guide requires that all logos at the sub-brand level be designed by the Department of Marketing and Communication and include the institutional logo or the words “California Baptist University.” [2]
