The DGMK, Deutsche Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für nachhaltige Energieträger, Mobilität und Kohlenstoffkreisläufe e.V., is a non-profit scientific association based in Hamburg. The organization adopted its current long name at a general meeting on November 4, 2021, replacing the previous name Deutsche Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Erdöl, Erdgas und Kohle e.V. [1] The name change was entered in the register of associations in early 2022, reflecting the organization’s engagement with energy transition topics. [2]
Design and History
The DGMK’s visual identity was developed by the Darmstadt-based agency DIE NEUDENKER®. The agency first created the basic design elements during a website relaunch and was subsequently commissioned to extend the system into a full corporate design. [3]
The organization’s own history page documents three distinct logo eras: a logo used until 1963, a stylized benzene ring logo introduced in 1963, and the current logo in use since 1996. [4]
The current identity centers on a hexagon as the key design element in both the logo and the broader branding. The hexagon represents benzene, a compound that occurs naturally in hard coal and crude oil, two of the DGMK’s four major research areas. The other two areas are natural gas and petrochemistry. [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
DIE NEUDENKER® created a color system to guide users through the DGMK’s subject areas. The DGMK and its district groups are identified by green, exploration and extraction by orange, processing and application by petroleum, petrochemistry by violet, and conversion of carbon carriers by red. These corporate colors are applied across all media, both online and offline, including the organization’s annual report, research report, conference report and program booklet. [3]
The website relaunch project also describes emerald green as the DGMK’s corporate color, with four additional colors used to color-code the organization’s core themes across the site. [5]
Typography and Design
As part of the corporate design project, DIE NEUDENKER® developed a corporate font for the DGMK. The agency’s services for the project included corporate design, the color system, the corporate font, cover designs for the organization’s publications, a PowerPoint template and letterhead. [3] The specific typeface used has not been publicly documented.
