Daikin Industries, Ltd. is a Japanese manufacturer of air conditioning systems, fluorochemicals, and oil hydraulics, headquartered in Osaka. The company traces its origins to 1924, when Akira Yamada founded the Osaka Kinzoku Kogyosho Limited Partnership, and it was formally incorporated as Osaka Kinzoku Kogyo Co., Ltd. in 1934. The name was changed to Daikin Kogyo Co., Ltd. in 1963 and to Daikin Industries, Ltd. in 1982. [1]
Design and History
The current Daikin corporate symbol was established in 2004, the year of the company’s 80th anniversary, as a common mark for use among Daikin Group companies worldwide. [2] The chronology published by Daikin records that a commemorative project for the 80th anniversary was launched in the same year, alongside the establishment of the new corporate symbol. [2]
An earlier corporate symbol was adopted in 1934, when the company was established as Osaka Kinzoku Kogyo Co., Ltd. [2] The 1934 mark differed considerably in appearance from the current triangle-based symbol, though detailed visual documentation of that early mark is limited in official sources.
Meaning and Symbolism
According to Daikin’s official FAQ, the logo is described as “the symbol of our bold, continuous pursuit of high ideals.” [1] The sharp triangle is composed of two colors, Daikin Light Blue and Black, and represents the three technological fields of machinery, chemicals, and electronics, along with the integrated technologies Daikin develops in those fields. [1] The logo’s orientation, pointing up and to the right, expresses the pioneering spirit of the Daikin Group as it moves into the future. [1]
Daikin’s Philippines subsidiary adds that the two blue colors used in the corporate logo and triangle design element reflect Daikin’s emphasis on intellect and brightness, while black expresses strength, a sense of positive presence, and stability. [3]
Typography and Design
Daikin’s brand guidelines state that the company name logotypes use a typeface originally produced for the Daikin Group, ensuring that the names of companies in the Daikin Group are accurately communicated. [4] The guidelines also specify that the Daikin logo’s background should be white as a basic rule, with restrictions on backgrounds that make the logo difficult to see, minimum clear space requirements, and minimum display size limits.
