Heidolph is a German manufacturer of laboratory equipment, headquartered in Schwabach near Nuremberg. The company traces its origins to 1938, when Hans Heidolph founded a metal goods factory in Schwabach, and it has since grown into a global supplier of rotary evaporators, magnetic stirrers, shakers and related lab instruments.[1][2]
Design and History
The current Heidolph wordmark and signet were developed in a project described by the German design agency Designship as a “logo development” for Heidolph. According to the agency, the goal was to create a logo with a significant relation to the existing signet, and the result was a reduced mark that now bears the initial of the company within itself.[3]
An earlier Heidolph-Elektro symbol, used by the company’s drive engineering division, was originally designed by Oanh Pham Phu in 1967.[4] This 1967 mark is documented as a circle-based symbol, though detailed visual descriptions of it are limited in available sources.
In January 2020, Hans Heidolph GmbH filed two related U.S. trademark applications that describe the current brand elements. The first, for the combined “HEIDOLPH HBX” mark, consists of an orange dot and a curved black band to the left of the word “HEIDOLPH” in black, with the stylized letters “HBX” in black below. The part of the “X” that slants from left to right is a stylized distilling flask, black at the top and orange at the bottom.[5] A companion application covers the “HBX” element alone, described identically without the full wordmark.[6] Both applications were registered in October 2021.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The trademark registration for the current mark explicitly claims black and orange as features of the mark.[5] The stylized distilling flask integrated into the “X” of “HBX” directly references the laboratory apparatus that forms the core of Heidolph’s product line, particularly its rotary evaporators. The Designship project description notes that the logo’s development involved a “symbolic presentation of functional sequences of the product,” indicating that the mark was designed to visually connect to the company’s laboratory equipment.[3]
Heidolph’s corporate slogan, “Research made easy,” has been described by the company as more than a marketing phrase, serving as its corporate mission.[8] The slogan appears alongside the logo on the company’s official website.[9]
Typography and Design
The current Heidolph wordmark uses a clean, uppercase sans-serif letterform for “HEIDOLPH,” as described in the trademark registration.[5] The mark combines this wordmark with a geometric signet consisting of an orange dot and a curved black band positioned to the left of the text.[5] The “HBX” submark below the wordmark incorporates the distilling flask motif into the letterform itself, creating a direct visual link between the typography and the company’s laboratory equipment focus.[5]
