Japan Display Inc. (JDI) is a Japanese manufacturer of small- and medium-sized display panels, formed through the consolidation of the display businesses of Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba, with operations beginning on April 1, 2012.[1][2]
Design and History
JDI’s corporate identity is built around a symbol the company calls “The Infinite Mirror.” According to the company’s official brand story, the open rectangle represents “infinite expansion and infinite potential into the future.”[3]
The current logo mark was filed as a trademark with the USPTO on October 14, 2022, and registered on December 19, 2023. The official mark description states it consists of “a side view of a rectangle with a smiley face superimposed in the middle of the side of the rectangle.”[4][5]
An earlier trademark for “JDI+Japan Display Inc. logo” was filed on March 30, 2012, shortly before the company began operations, and registered on May 16, 2014.[6] A separate “JDI & Logo” trademark was filed on January 28, 2014, and registered on March 1, 2015.[7]
In February 2023, JDI consolidated branding for its industrial display products, transitioning all new production previously identified with the KOE logo to the JDI logo.[8][9]
Meaning and Symbolism
JDI’s official brand story names its corporate identity “The Infinite Mirror.” The open rectangle is described by the company as representing “infinite expansion and infinite potential into the future.”[3] The smiley face element, as documented in the USPTO trademark record, is superimposed in the middle of the rectangle’s side.[4]
