SUMCO Corporation is a Japanese manufacturer specializing in silicon wafers, the substrates on which semiconductors are fabricated. The company was established in July 1999 as Silicon United Manufacturing Corp., a joint venture of Sumitomo Metal Industries, Mitsubishi Materials, and Mitsubishi Materials Silicon Corp. In February 2002, the company acquired Sumitomo Metal Industries’ silicon wafer business, merged with Mitsubishi Materials Silicon Corp., and changed its name to Sumitomo Mitsubishi Silicon Corp. In August 2005, the corporate name was changed to SUMCO CORPORATION. [1]
Design and History
The current SUMCO logo is a typographic wordmark. A trademark registration filed by SUMCO CORPORATION describes the mark as consisting of the wording “SUMCO” in dark blue, with the letter “U” in a lighter shade of blue featuring horizontal bands crossing the letter, and a dark blue oval positioned beneath the “U.” The white appearing in the horizontal stripes of the “U” represents a transparent area in the mark and is not claimed as a feature. [2]
SUMCO has also registered a separate symbol mark. A trademark registration for SUMCO CORPORATION describes a mark consisting of a circle within a stylized ring, with red appearing in the circle design and blue in the stylized ring design. [3]
Earlier trademark filings show different visual directions. A 2001 trademark application for the word “SUMCO” was filed in monochrome (black and white). [4] A separate international registration, filed around 2004, described a mark comprising the denomination “sumco” accompanied by a drawing of a triangle with a zone slightly detached from one of its apices, with the apex pointing toward the wordmark. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
SUMCO’s official corporate materials do not publish an explanation of the logo’s symbolism or color meaning. The company’s stated mission is to be the world’s No. 1 silicon wafer supplier, and its vision includes “World’s Best in Technology” as a stated goal. [6]
Typography and Design
The SUMCO wordmark uses a custom letterform treatment in which the “U” is distinguished from the other letters by its lighter blue shade and horizontal banding. [2] No official source identifies the typeface used in the wordmark or attributes the design to a specific designer or agency.
