Kenwood Corporation is a Japanese electronics manufacturer known for audio equipment, amateur radio, and wireless communication systems. The company traces its roots to 1946 and operated under the name Trio Corporation before adopting the Kenwood brand. Today, Kenwood operates as a product brand within the JVCKENWOOD Corporation group, which was formed through the merger of JVC and Kenwood in 2008.
Design and History
The Kenwood visual identity was created as part of a corporate identity program developed by the Japanese design firm PAOS. The project began in 1981 when Trio Corporation, then one of Japan’s top three audio manufacturers, was experiencing a sharp business slump. PAOS proposed replacing the Trio corporate brand with the name KENWOOD, which had already been used in international markets since 1964. The new identity was presented in 1982, and the company was officially renamed Kenwood Corporation in 1986 after the brand proved highly successful with young consumers.[1]
The PAOS project involved a comprehensive visual identity overhaul that extended beyond the logo itself. According to PAOS, the VI development policy converted everything into media, including plant exteriors, which were transformed into company signboards. Kenwood car stickers produced during this period became so popular with young consumers that they sparked a global craze.[1]
In 2008, Kenwood merged with JVC to form JVC KENWOOD Holdings. On August 1, 2011, the holding company changed its name to JVCKENWOOD Corporation and introduced a new corporate logo. The new logo was designed to express the company’s vision of “Creating excitement and peace of mind for the people of the world.” The design deliberately minimized decorative marks to ensure high visibility even at small sizes, with the curves and roundness of the letterforms symbolizing “excitement” and the stable bold lettering symbolizing “peace of mind.”[2][3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Kenwood brand logo features a red triangle as its most distinctive element. According to JVCKENWOOD’s official brand description, the red triangle represents innovation, sharpness, and high quality.[4] The JVCKENWOOD Design Corporation similarly states that the KENWOOD brand embodies the ideas of high quality, innovation, and sharpness in the red triangle of its brand logo.[5]
The triangle device appears above the letter “W” in the KENWOOD wordmark. In official product authentication guidance issued by JVCKENWOOD, the company notes that on genuine products the triangle above the “W” appears in black, while counterfeit products bear a red triangle, indicating that both color variations exist within the brand’s usage.[6]
Typography and Design
The Kenwood wordmark is rendered in bold, uppercase lettering. The design centers on the brand name itself, with the red triangle positioned above the “W” serving as the primary visual accent. The JVCKENWOOD corporate logo introduced in 2011, which covers the parent company rather than the Kenwood product brand, was designed with a universal perspective for high visibility, using minimal decoration and bold letterforms to convey stability.[2]
