Philco is an American electronics brand with roots dating to the late 19th century in Philadelphia. The name became synonymous with radios, televisions, and home appliances for much of the 20th century, and the brand continues to appear on consumer electronics in various markets under different owners.
Design and History
Philco traces its origins to Helios Electric Company, established in Philadelphia in 1892, which produced rechargeable batteries. The company changed its name to Philco in 1906, derived from “Philadelphia Company.” [1] By 1930, Philco had become the largest manufacturer of radio receivers in the world, a position it held for the next 20 years. [1] The company officially changed its name to Philco Corporation in 1940. [2]
Philco’s visual identity has undergone several distinct changes, particularly as the brand passed through different corporate owners. In 1961, Ford Motor Company acquired Philco. [2] The brand later moved through GTE, White Consolidated Industries, and eventually AB Electrolux, which acquired WCI in 1986. [1] In North America, the Philco brand is owned by Philips. [3]
In Brazil, where Philco had operated since 1934, the brand lost its stylized eye logo when it was sold by Itautec in October 2005, as that mark was registered by the Itaú group. [4] The Brazilian operation, then under Grupo Gradiente, relaunched the brand in 2006 with a new visual identity created by the design agency Figo Design. [4]
In August 2016, Philco in Argentina unveiled a renewed logo with updated typography. The new identity was developed by the agency Sure, led by Diego Giaccone. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2016 Philco identity unified the brand’s representative color as a blue-green, described as a fusion intended to maintain the historical blue and green colors of the brand. [6] The redesign also moved the brand’s characteristic arrow to the end of its isotipo, representing the concept of advancement and technological innovation. [6]
Earlier Philco marks were registered as wordmarks in black and white, including a trademark filed in 1953 and another in 1954, indicating that the company’s early identity relied primarily on the Philco name itself rather than a pictorial symbol. [7] [8]
Typography and Design
The 2016 Philco logo incorporated a renewed typography that accompanied all brand communications. [6] The redesign was described as making the brand image more accessible and functional. [5] Specific typeface details for the current or historical Philco logos have not been publicly documented.
