Nidec Corporation, the Japanese motor manufacturer headquartered in Kyoto, adopted its current wordmark logo in 2023, when the company changed its corporate name from Nihon Densan (日本電産株式会社) to Nidec Corporation (ニデック株式会社) on April 1 of that year. The new logotype was announced in June 2022, ahead of the company’s 50th anniversary in 2023. The name “Nidec” itself derives from the Japanese name: “Ni” from Nihon (Japan) and “de” from Densan (electric production). [1] [2]
Design and History
The 2023 logotype was introduced as part of a broader corporate rebranding that unified the names of domestic and international subsidiaries under the “Nidec” banner, a move the company said was intended to advance integrated global group management under the “One Nidec” concept. [1] [2]
According to the company’s official announcement, the basic font design of the new logotype expresses the company’s 50-year history. The straightforward, basic design represents the trust built over five decades, while the aligned horizontal and vertical lines express precise technological capability. [1]
In November 2022, Nidec also introduced a separate 50th anniversary commemorative logo, designed in the corporate green color. The logo features overlapping “5” and “0” forms that evoke employees linking arms, expressing the creation of group synergy and the pursuit of “One Nidec.” This anniversary logo was displayed from December 1, 2022 through March 31, 2024. [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The most distinctive element of the current Nidec logotype is the dakuten (voicing mark) on the character “デ” (de) in the Japanese wordmark. The company states that the upward-slanting dakuten expresses the ambition and drive to leap forward into the future, to solidify its position as number one in the world, and to convey the passion for work as well as the technology and digital focus at the core of Nidec. [1]
Green is the established corporate color of Nidec. The 50th anniversary logo was explicitly described as being designed in the corporate color green. [3] The green color is also referenced in Nidec’s branding guidelines for its product brands, which describe “Nidec Green” as an iconic color used to make logos stand out on both light and dark backgrounds. [4]
Typography and Design
Nidec’s official description of the logotype emphasizes the deliberate construction of the letterforms: the basic font design represents the company’s 50-year journey, and the aligned horizontal and vertical lines express precise technical capability. [1] The company has not publicly identified a specific typeface or designer for the 2023 logotype.
In 2024, Nidec’s Motion & Energy business unit worked with London-based brand consultancy GW+Co to unify 21 sub-brands under a refreshed Nidec visual identity. The work received Gold and Diamond Awards for Best Brand Architecture at the Transform Awards Europe in 2025. [5]
