Aker Solutions is a Norwegian engineering company that delivers integrated solutions, products and services to the global energy industry, enabling low-carbon oil and gas production and developing renewable solutions for future energy needs.[1] The company traces its origins to a mechanical workshop founded on the Aker River in Oslo in 1841.[2]
Design and History
The current Aker Solutions identity was introduced on 3 April 2008, when the company changed its name from Aker Kvaerner to Aker Solutions and launched a new logo and visual profile.[3] The name change was described by President and CEO Simen Lieungh as “a simplification and strengthening of our corporate identity” that outlined the company’s offering of comprehensive industrial solutions.[3]
The new graphical profile was developed by Oslo-based Dinamo Design.[3] According to the company’s launch announcement, the logotype was designed to communicate clarity, with a precise form that maintains a tie to Aker Kvaerner’s industrial heritage while invoking movement and suggesting new directions for the future.[3]
The company’s official logo page describes the mark as “the primary visual symbol of our brand, representing the company, our team, and our solutions.”[4] The logo is available in four color options: navy and orange, navy, black, and white, with the navy and orange version preferred on white backgrounds.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
At the launch, Lieungh stated that the new icon and name “symbolise clarity, innovation and the drive to move forward,” honoring the commitment and skill of the company’s people.[3] The official announcement described the logotype as logical and structured, embodying depth and suggesting focus.[3]
The color palette was described in the launch materials as “petroleum blue and steely grey” evoking a professional attitude, with “bright orange” accenting a fresh, dynamic palette.[3]
Typography and Design
The wordmark uses a two-part typographic treatment. The bold “Aker” builds a stable foundation, while “Solutions” appears in a lighter typeface, exemplifying new thinking, energy and agility.[3]
