MVV Energie AG, the municipal energy company based in Mannheim, Germany, has undergone two significant visual identity overhauls since 2017. The current logo centers on the “Energieschleife” (energy loop), a dynamic ribbon-like form that integrates the three letters of the MVV brand into a single continuous shape.
Design and History
In April 2017, MVV Energie presented a new brand identity and logo, developed in cooperation with the Munich brand agency KMS TEAM. The redesign replaced a star-shaped logo that had been in use for over three decades. The new mark was built around the concept of “Energieschleifen” (energy loops), which the company said symbolized, through their dynamism and color diversity, the breadth of the enterprise and its innovative, future-oriented approach. The logo was derived from these loops, joining the letters MVV in a new way. The brand idea behind the identity was “Wir begeistern mit Energie” (“We inspire with energy”).[1][2][3]
The 2017 identity received two design awards in 2018: the German Design Award in the category “Excellent Communications Design” and the iF Design Award in the category “Discipline Communications.” The German Design Award jury praised the logo’s high recognition value, noting that the distinctive loop successfully translated the theme of energy into a memorable mark.[4]
In 2023, on the occasion of its 150th anniversary, MVV refined the identity again. The company kept the shape of the logo and the energy loop but changed the colors to blue and green tones. According to Sebastian Ackermann, Director of Communication and Branding at MVV Energie, red had always played a role in MVV’s history but was no longer in line with the company’s climate strategy. The color change also made MVV and its renewable energy subsidiary JUWI recognizable as part of the same brand family. The brand values “energetic, open-minded and reliable” were supplemented with “forward-looking.”[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The energy loop is described by KMS TEAM, MVV’s brand partner, as a symbol of the inexhaustible nature of renewable energy. It serves as both the company’s logo and its dynamic corporate signature.[3]
In the 2017 version, the red color was described as MVV’s traditional brand color and a symbol of energy, while blue expressed reliability and confidence. The logo, made up of spatial waves symbolizing different types of energy, distinctively displayed the three letters of the MVV brand.[5] The red and blue also referenced the Mannheim city colors, which the company said symbolized energy and enthusiasm as well as reliability and trust, underscoring its bond with its home city.[6]
Following the 2023 color change, the dominant green and blue spectrum was described as visualizing the company’s climate-positive orientation and sustainable energy supply.[7]
Typography and Design
The 2017 logo was formed from the energy loop, which was developed from a sine curve and stood for alternating current. The three letters of the MVV brand were joined within this loop in a new arrangement.[8][1] The energy loop was applied systematically across the entire corporate identity, from the website to advertising materials and workwear.[4]
