DTE Energy, the Detroit-based energy company, has used two distinct corporate logos since its formation as a holding company in 1996. The current mark, introduced in 2017, is a simplified wordmark that drops the word “Energy” from the brand name, a change developed by the brand consultancy BasedOn.
Design and History
DTE Energy Company was organized in Michigan on January 26, 1995, under the name “DTE Holdings, Inc.” and changed its name to DTE Energy Company on November 2, 1995. On January 1, 1996, it became the holding company for The Detroit Edison Company, which had been incorporated in 1903.[1]
The first DTE Energy identity was unveiled in January 1996, designed by Anspach Grossman Portugal in New York. According to Design Week, the logo featured a sunburst and a figure, reflecting chairman and chief executive John Lobbia’s statement that the business “always will have two major aspects, people and energy.”[2]
In 2017, DTE Energy engaged BasedOn, a brand strategy and design studio, to evolve the brand. BasedOn’s work included simplifying the master brand name by eliminating the word “Energy,” allowing for a cleaner structure that could work more easily with sub-brands. The design team simplified the artwork, removed the word “Energy” from the brandmark, and refined the letterforms to make the logo easily adaptable to both physical and digital environments.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
BasedOn documented that the 2017 identity included a visual language of graphic elements capturing the idea of energy, with lines radiating outward symbolically powering people and things, reinforcing the pillar “transforming with energy.”[3]
The studio also noted that the DTE font projects strength and that the blue of the palette is “a well established color for leadership.”[3]
Typography and Design
BasedOn developed a custom typeface for the DTE brand, referred to simply as “the DTE font,” which the studio described as projecting strength.[3] The brand’s primary color is a deep blue, recorded by Brandfetch as hex code #245269, named “Cello.”[4]
