Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, commonly known as POWERGRID, is an Indian state-owned company headquartered in Gurugram that is engaged in the transmission of power. Founded on 23 October 1989, the company operates under the Ministry of Power, Government of India. Its visual identity centers on a distinctive emblem that combines an electricity symbol with a surrounding grid pattern.
Design and History
The Power Grid Corporation of India logo depicts a symbol of electricity in a red colour shade, surrounded by grids in a blue colour shade. According to the official description provided by the User Experience Design & Technology (UXDT) division of India’s National Informatics Centre, the grids in the logo depict the Indian Power System for Planning and Operational purposes. The Indian power system is divided into five regional grids for planning and operational purposes, a structure reflected in the logo’s grid motif. [1]
In 2018, POWERGRID undertook a logo redesign project. A creative team developed a new logo that “encompassed new aspects of Powergrid’s values and vision,” and also produced a Corporate Identity Manual for standardization of the logo. The redesign was documented as a branding case study by the agency involved, with the campaign period listed as 2018. [2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo’s central red element represents electricity, while the surrounding blue grids symbolize the Indian power system used for planning and operational purposes. This dual-element design communicates the company’s core function: transmitting electrical power across India’s interconnected regional grid network. [1]
