E.ON is a German energy company headquartered in Essen, focused on electricity distribution networks and sustainable customer solutions. Its visual identity has undergone two major phases: the original brand created at the company’s founding in 2000, and a comprehensive relaunch in spring 2024 that refined the iconic elements while introducing a new corporate typeface and visual language.

Design and History

E.ON was created in 2000 through the merger of German energy companies Veba and Viag. The name and logo were developed by the agencies Demuth and Wolff Olins for a fee of about three million German marks. The company’s spokesperson praised the label creation for its unusual expressive power, stating that the new logo expressed all desired qualities: energy, innovation, internet, departure, globality, sympathy, high visibility and attention. A new corporate color, “Pantone warm red,” was introduced at the same time. Before the public learned of the new name, the company ran full-page advertisements in over seventy newspapers and magazines, plus posters on 120,000 billboards, all in the new warm red with no content or sender identification. The logo was revealed in a second phase by the end of July 2000.[1][2]

Wolff Olins described its task as building a “mega-brand” that would present the company as fast-moving, youthful and unbureaucratic, and it created E.ON’s visual identity and its “compelling warm character.” The brand launched in 2000 with “energy” as its new focus.[3]

In spring 2024, E.ON launched a comprehensive brand relaunch developed with agency partners VIVALDI (strategy) and TEAMBBDO, which included the Peter Schmidt Group, BBDO, Interone and Batten & Company. The relaunch was driven by E.ON’s strategic repositioning as a “playmaker” in the energy transition, moving away from energy generation toward distribution networks and sustainable solutions. The Peter Schmidt Group built upon the brand’s existing iconic elements and derived from them a refreshed logo, a new corporate typeface and a coherent visual language. Initial implementation of the new brand identity began just three months after the project began.[4][5][6]

Meaning and Symbolism

The 2024 relaunch centered on the concept of the “Playmaker Dot,” which unites purpose, brand attributes and corporate culture. The strategy and communication were developed by the Peter Schmidt Group, TEAMBBDO and VIVALDI Group under this concept. The relaunch campaign was titled “Revamping an Iconic Brand,” reflecting the goal of positioning the 25-year-old brand as a key player in a new energy age.[7]

The new design gives the brand’s strongest assets prominence: the striking logo and the characteristic red. The iconic E.ON red takes centre stage, with the logo serving as the foundation for all brand assets. The design focuses on reduction and clarity, giving the red more space and deriving all assets from the logo, including a new house typeface, 3D illustrations and digital presentations.[6][8]

Typography and Design

As part of the 2024 relaunch, the Peter Schmidt Group derived a new corporate typeface directly from the logo, along with motion principles, to ensure maximum recognizability. The typeface was developed specifically for E.ON and consistently places messages of change within the context of the brand.[6][4]

The relaunch also introduced new CGI graphics created in collaboration with Field.io to reinforce the spatial experience of the brand, and a brand-specific corporate sound was added. The German Brand Award jury praised the coherent integration of typography, signature corporate sound and 3D illustration style.[6][7]
