Edison S.p.A., the Italian energy company headquartered in Milan, adopted a new logo on 7 November 2016 as part of a broader repositioning toward sustainability and renewable energy. The redesign was developed by Inarea, an Italian brand consultancy whose portfolio includes logos for Enel, Rai, TIM and Trenitalia.[1][2]
Design and History
The 2016 logo replaced the previous mark, which had been in use since 2002. That earlier identity, introduced after the merger with Italenergia, featured a geometric eagle design that was retired in favor of a new symbol still under study at the time.[3]
The current logo is constructed from circular arcs that evoke the roundness of the earth, the sun and the sky, understood as the original and renewable sources of energy, conveying a sense of movement and dynamism. The form, which opens and wraps around itself, recalls the lowercase “e” of the name and symbolically suggests an embrace.[1]
The company announced the new visual identity to mark a shift in positioning focused on renewable sources, competitive offers and innovative energy services. The new logo introduced a wide palette of bright, luminous colors alongside the historic Edison green, which the company said continues to testify to its attention to sustainability and nature.[4][5]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to Inarea, the circular arcs of the logo reference the earth, sun and sky as the original and renewable matrices of energy, transmitting movement and dynamism. The opening, wrapping form simultaneously recalls the letter “e” of the Edison name and suggests an embrace, a gesture tied to the company’s emphasis on the centrality of people and customer relationships.[1][6]
The color palette was chosen to express vitality and energy, with the historic Edison green retained as a marker of the company’s commitment to sustainability and nature.[4][6]
Typography and Design
The wordmark plays with the letterforms of the name, using a lowercase initial “e” while the remaining letters are uppercase. The strokes are deliberately light and barely marked, described as brushstrokes that are only hinted at, a choice that reinforces the emphasis on people and lightness in the brand’s new direction.[7][6]
