Husky Energy Inc. was a Canadian integrated energy company headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. Its visual identity centered on a stylized husky dog head, a reference to the Siberian Husky breed that gave the company its name. The company was founded in Cody, Wyoming, in 1938 and moved its operations to Canada around 1946, where it built a significant retail fuel and travel centre network across Western Canada and Ontario.[1]
Design and History
The most recent Husky Energy logo consisted of a husky dog head inside a square, with the words “HUSKY ENERGY” positioned to the right of the square.[2] The mark was registered as a trademark by Husky Oil Operations Limited, with the dog head design serving as the central graphic element throughout the company’s branding.[2]The husky dog head motif has been a consistent element of the company’s identity since its early years. Early signage prominently displayed the head of a male Husky, and the company chose the Siberian Husky as its logo as a nod to the breed’s reputation as intrepid sled dogs.[3] In 1946, coinciding with the company’s move to Canada, the logo underwent a transformation, featuring the full profile of the Husky with a more subdued color palette.[4]In January 2021, Cenovus Energy Inc. completed its acquisition of Husky Energy Inc. in an all-stock transaction.[1] Following the acquisition, Cenovus announced it was selling 337 Husky gas stations to Federated Co-operatives Ltd and Parkland for a total of $420 million.[1] The Husky brand was subsequently phased out of the retail fuel landscape, with Husky and Cenovus Travel Centres rebranding under BVD Petroleum in August 2026.[1]Meaning and Symbolism
The husky dog head was the defining symbol of the Husky Energy brand. The company selected the Siberian Husky as its logo in 1938, reportedly as a nod to the breed’s reputation as intrepid sled dogs that assisted Admiral Robert Peary during his expeditions in search of the North Pole.[3]The color scheme of the final logo was documented in trademark registrations. The shaded area around the perimeter of the square with rounded corners was blue, the space behind the dog head inside the blue perimeter was white, and the shaded area of the dog head was red with the balance in white.[5] Red, blue and white were claimed as features of the mark.[6]Earlier versions of the mark used a similar palette. A 2011 trademark registration for the HUSKY OIL word and dog head design claimed the dog’s head in red, with the border around the dog head and the words HUSKY OIL in blue.[7]Logo Index is an independent educational archive covering logos, visual identities and graphic design history.
