Saipem S.p.A. is an Italian engineering and energy services contractor specializing in offshore drilling, subsea construction and pipeline installation. The company’s current visual identity dates to 2015, when it was introduced alongside a strategic separation from parent company Eni.

Design and History

Saipem was founded in 1957 through the merger of the drilling company SAIP and the construction firm Snam Montaggi. The acronym derives from the Italian wording “Società azionaria italiana perforazioni e montaggi” (Italian drilling and assembly joint stock company). The company’s first logo used letterforms from the AGIP logotype, reflecting its origins within the Eni group. In subsequent years, the mark consistently incorporated both the Eni six-legged dog symbol and institutional lettering, as seen in versions from 1974, 2002 and 2010.[1]

In October 2015, on the occasion of the company’s 60th anniversary and its separation from Eni, Saipem unveiled a new logo. The redesign was created by the branding agency Interbrand and retired the Eni six-legged dog symbol. The new mark consists of a large blue letter “S” with an oblique orange line, accompanied by the company name in capital letters.[1] The logo was presented during the announcement of the company’s new strategic plan, with CEO Stefano Cao describing it as marking “the beginning of a new Saipem.”[2]

The 2015 redesign was prompted by Eni’s decision to reduce its stake in Saipem, with the parent company selling 12.5% of its 42.9% holding to the Italian Strategic Fund (Fondo Strategico Italiano), leaving Eni with approximately 30.4%.[3] The new identity was designed to establish an independent brand presence following this corporate transition.

Meaning and Symbolism

The Museo del Marchio Italiano, an Italian brand archive, documents the symbolism of the 2015 Saipem mark. The petroleum blue color recalls the depths of the sea, reflecting the company’s offshore operations, while the orange element represents its connection to the world of energy.[1]

US trademark registrations for the mark describe it as a stylized letter “S” centered above the term “SAIPEM,” with the wordmark and the upper and lower portions of the letter “S” presented in blue-green and the center portion of the “S” shown in orange.[4] The colors orange and blue-green are claimed as features of the mark.[5]

In 2023, Saipem launched a new brand campaign titled “Dear Future,” introducing the brand payoff “Empower evolution.” The campaign was created by the creative agency This Is Ideal and reflects the company’s repositioning around the energy transition.[6] The campaign did not introduce a new logo but accompanied the existing visual identity with a new communications platform.
