Rockstar Games, the Take-Two Interactive subsidiary behind the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series, has used a single iconic mark since its founding in 1998: a bold letter “R” with a star attached to the end of its right leg, enclosed by a rounded square. The logo is typically rendered in black and gold on a yellow or orange background, and it has appeared on every major Rockstar release since the company’s earliest days. [1]
Design and History
The logo was created in 1998 by artist Jeremy Blake, with contributions from designer Karen Scott (then Karen Mui), who joined the company alongside Blake in early 1998, before Rockstar was formally established. [1] Blake had been introduced to Rockstar co-founder Sam Houser through a shared appreciation for Stanley Kubrick films, and Houser invited him to work at the new startup. [1]
The design brief was shaped by a specific marketing plan: Rockstar intended to print the logo on stickers and distribute them across New York City, where the company had just opened its office. Scott recalled that the logo needed to work as a sticker with adhesive so strong it could not be peeled off, which influenced the mark’s rounded corners, making it harder to grip and remove. [1] The team worked out of a closet-sized office with no desks, and Scott remembered working on a cardboard box. [1]
Scott and Blake left Rockstar in 2000, but the logo remained. Blake returned to Rockstar as a freelancer before his death in 2007. [1]
Meaning and Symbolism
Scott explained that the gold or golden-yellow color of the logo was a deliberate nod to the 1970s, citing early Kodak logos and the visual atmosphere of early rockabilly music as influences. [1] The star itself is a direct reference to the company name, which translates literally to “rock star.” [1]
The mark’s distinctive “R” has also been the subject of legal protection. In 2024, Take-Two Interactive filed trademark oppositions against Remedy Entertainment over Remedy’s updated “R” logo, submitting the Rockstar logo as evidence and claiming a likelihood of confusion between the two marks. [2]
Typography and Design
Scott confirmed that the “R” in the logo is set in Helvetica Neue, and that the rounded radius around the edges of the mark was a functional decision tied to the sticker campaign. [1] The star is attached to the end of the “R’s” right leg, and the entire mark is enclosed by a rounded square. [3]
Rockstar’s official store describes the mark as the “Rockstar Games logo” and identifies “Rockstar Games and R*” as trademarks and logos of Take-Two Interactive. [4]
